Is a 5/8-8 nut considered ACME only?

What's the thread profile of the bolt look like?

:)

What about whit worth

It's for this.

I'm not 100% sure of the profile. I now see ACME being depicted as having a somewhat "squared" profile. These threads are more "pointy", maybe whitworth or unified?

Cannot tell on your picture if it is a square cut thread.

Other option is to spend $3 and buy a nut from McMaster. That will tell you for sure.

Are you using a thread gauge? reason I'm asking is there is also a 5/8-6 pitch as well.

I used a thread pitch gauge on it and it matched the 8.

For a brake winch? Maybe try Dutton Lainson for parts?

Depending on application, it may be safer to get a new winch, those are commonly used for raising the swing keel on small sailboats, and a faulty winch coupled with a 600lb keel can break your hand in a heartbeat as well as breaking the boat.

This is for my press as you may recall. I'm trying to avoid paying $100+ for a new brake winch. Mine is a Fulton and they don't have parts for mine. I can try Dutton Lainson but Im not sure if they are compatible. If I can find a nut with these threads I can weld it to another winch handle I have.
