Is a mini split right for me?

I’m trying to make a decision on a new open box MrCool 36k mini split. They’re asking $1,400 for it which I think is a good price compared to new but I’m not sure it will work in my shop.

My shop is 20x60’, with peak ceiling height being 18ft and 14’ at the front and rear. The door is insulated and the walls and ceiling only have minimal r13. I can add more insulation and some ceiling fans but I’m not sure if this unit will be enough to keep the shop cool.

For reference we are in the Midwest and at the time of writing this it is 91 in here with 60% humidity. Other days it is 80% humidity with the same temperature.
Will this thing be running constantly or can I reasonably expect to be at 70 degrees?

Thank you all

I dont think you can go wrong at that price, install it and see how well it will perform for you.

Mini splits run constantly no matter what, they ramp up and down depending on need to maintain temp. The thing to remember is it's a single source, think oversized window unit so unless you push the air around with fans it will be cooler near the unit and not give the coverage youd prefer.

We have a single mini in our house and it works well, problem like I stated before is getting cooling all the way to the other end of the house. The unit can maintain temp pretty good but take a hot sunny day and you use the oven it cant keep up.

Mr. Cool does NOT publish their cold weather performance specification !

Only their Mr. Cool Olympus units claim to have "hyper heat", the ability to provide heat below freezing WITHOUT a resistance heater.

I would start with this unit. It may keep up fine. If it struggles in some temps, you may need to add another unit on the opposite side. I bet this one will suffice.

The cfms these put out is impressive. You may not need fans

Edit- check for comed/federal rebates also.

Thank you for the only reasonable response besides the dsi. I decided to pull the trigger on this and see how it does, if not I’ll sell it or add another one.

Good info to check out the rebates, I didn’t think of that.

I would say 2 units each on the long side blowing the 20' direction. If you put them up to high it will not work very well. There are sites where you can size the HVAC system

https://www.ecomfort.com/stories/1439-What-Size-Mini-Split-Should-You-Buy.html

My shop is 36X36 12 ' ceilings with R19 insulation. I have one 3 ton works well both heating and cooling this is located in Oregon's Willamette Valley and I don't believe we get as hot as you do.

Good luck:beer:

At 60' I bet you'll need another in the other end of the garage...just something to know going in. I'd do the same route as you..add the first..if you need another grab it. The Mr Cool units run well as others have stated. 1400 for an open box is pretty good. Show pictures when you get it up and running
