Is a Modis worth buying into at this point?

Snap On rep knows I'm looking for a scanner. Told me today he's getting a Modis later this week with scope and all. Said he'd sell it to me for $2300. I have concerns over coverage and mainly speed of the box. Just wondering if its worth the investment or if I should just go to the Solus Ultra and not have the scope and other options for a while. Thoughts?

my snappy guy has a few on the truck from trade ins. He mentioned there will be no updates or support for them in a couple years.

AFIK the Modis scanner updates are the same as for the Solus. The scope and Vantage programs may not be updateable, but I cant really see that as a concern. My Modis recently died, and I replaced it with a used trade-in, for $2500. Check what the unit it updated to before you lay out cash, if it is a recent update, the price is ok by my research. The scope and Vantage (PGMM) are powerful tools that you dont get with a Solus. I use my Madis daily, and have access to the shops Varis, I dont care for the Varis in a lot of ways, but it is a great tool as well.

It depends on the update that is in it. When it comes to scanners, the expensive part is not the hardware. It's the software. As long as it is reasonably current it is worth that much money. I also don't think I'd worry too much about updates being discontinued on it anytime soon. They still keep updating the Solus Scanner and they haven't sold them for 7 years.

Well, considering we don't see anything that new unless it's for an oil change, I think that should do pretty good.

My biggest concern still is how fast it's going to be, how quickly is relays the PID data so I can watch real time. I need to be able to look at sensors movements real time, and if it can't keep up, then it's going to be a Solus Ultra for me instead and a separate scope down the road.

See if the Dealer will let you use it for a week. Use the Custom Data list if you want to speed up the data refresh rate. It works nicely, especially on cars with a slower PID update rate.

Go buy a cheap laptop and purchase the auto enginuity software. I have had this for years. Works great! I just updated it for $75.00. We had it originally on a dell Inspiron, and had some trouble. Threw that out and now have it on an IBM think pad. I think the basic software with the domestic enhanced is about $800.00. I have never used a solus or modus, but if it is like everything else electronic snap off sells, it will be obsolete in a couple years. or your dealer quits and leave you high and dry.

Any other opinions? It's either this or a Solus Ultra for nearly double the cost.

For what it's worth, I just bought a Solus Ultra about 3 months ago for $2800 new on the truck and it came with 13.(what ever) update that came out in april.

For the price, might be worth it haggle him down on an ultra like I did.

What's he quoting you for an Ultra?

We didn't talk price on the Solus Ultra.....yet. I'm sort of planning on list at $3895 but will try to knock him down from there. Worst case scenario type of thing.

It's sad, I was working a deal with my Matco guy to match the Solus Ultra/KRL722 deal Snap On has this month. Matco guy let me borrow a Launch x431 GDS. Try as hard as I could I just didn't like it. Slow, the OE interface made looking for the same thing on different manufacturers a PITA, and big and awkward. Big plus it had was it came with Euro (REALLY good Euro coverage at that) and updates are only $600 and you can add boxes like a scope box, battery tester box, and sensor emulator box (REALLY cool), but I just couldn't get over the unintuitiveness of the software interface.
