I currently have a dewalt 18v (not xrp) drill, flex light (not led) and sawsall that work fine. After reading all the coments on here about them I was thinking of getting a dewalt impact driver as well if a good deal comes along. My question is should I just get the bare Nicad tool off amazon to use my current 2 18v batteries or hold out and upgrade to the Lion series? If i upgrade to Lion what voltage is best for the impact driver? I realize higher the voltage the longer run time and more power, but isn't it a trade off for weight and size as well.

they make li-ion for your tools now. battery is dc9181 for the non XRP i have 2 with the charger using with older nicad tools. my nicads were not really holding a charge well anymore so I got 2 batteries and a charger

I would suggest you get the Dewalt impact driver with the Li-Ion batterys as a kit. you can use those batteries on your old Dewalt tools as they are interchangeable. That way you get the new technology batteries but still can use your older tools.

Your existing charger will likely not work with the LiIon batteries (if the charger is black in color, it won't work, if it is yellow, it will). My suggestion is to buy the new tool as part of a LiIon kit with charger and batteries, that will give you everything you'll need and actually be cheaper than buying a bare tool, a charger and LiIon battery separately.

only thing is the older tools look goofy with the new li-ion batteries. the foot print on the tool is larger than the battery.
