Is Evaporust any good?

So, I was at this auction yesterday and bought a 55 gallon drum of Evaporust for $110. I'm hoping it works as advertised but I was talking to a guy that worked at the company I bought it from and he said it doesn't work. I'm planning on throwing some stuff in a bucket later tonight and give it a try.

It works great, but the longer you leave parts in it the better it works. I believe my gallon containers of it say to leave parts in it for 3-4 hours. I find much better results leaving them in for 24 hours. Evapo Rust doesn't affect anything but rust, so generally you don't have to worry about leaving something in for too long.

evaporust works good.
i've never bought a drum but i've heard of guys that do and dump parts into it over and over.
that wont work well.
if you want to derust a handfull of small stuff like wrenches you should just use a small tub/container the best is a used black chinese food delivery container.
i've got a stack of those just for "cleaning" stuff.
lets use a handfull of wrenches for example.
a small tub w/ just enough evaporust to keep the wrenches submerged is enough. let them soak for 24 hours. and clean them of w/ warm soapy water afterwards.
that small tub will do 2 maybe 3 batches of tools/items.
after that you will see the evaporust is getting dirty/nasty and it will become less effective.
dump it out in the backyard. do not put it back in the big 55gal drum.
the used stuff will contaminate(weaken) the good stuff.

of course it depends on what item you want derusted. how old/rusty/big/small.

just experiment w/ it a little bit at a time because results may vary

EvapoRust works. But it's better for some things than others.

It works great on light rust, items with chrome or paint that you want to preserve. Every used tool I buy spends a night in EvapoRust.

That said, I've had some paint get real "weak" after soaking a long soak. I used a galvanized pan to soak some larger items and it lifted the zinc coating.

I don't generally use it on heavily rusted items. That takes too many soak/scrub iterations to be worth the effort and it eats up the EvapoRust.

Clean any dirt or grease off the parts before soaking.

I re-use my ER all the time. Every now and then I filter it through a coffee filter to make it last longer. You could keep some in a 5 gallon bucket (with lid) and just use that until it doesn't work anymore. The important thing about making it last and re-usable, is to remove as much of the rust and debris as you can between uses. That way you aren't saturating it any more than necessary.

I do the same thing with Simple Green and CLR to make them last longer as well.

Is there a date on that drum? I'm not sure what the shelf life is but, that's probably more than you'll ever use.

Great score though if it's real. Definitely worthy of a YOU ****!!! (unless it's a drum of something else)

Slightly warm evaporust works better. Heated garage is ok.

For anyone in the midwest Rural King has Evaporust for about $16-17 a gallon everyday. I just picked up a gallon for 15% off that price a few weeks ago during a one day "everything that fits in a 5 gal. bucket" sale that I stumbled upon when I went there for some Milton air fittings.

Congrats Fluxion! The best price 1 gallon Evapo-Rust price I have taken advantage of was at Rural King at $15.

I have used Evapo-Rust for several years and it is great stuff. I purchased a multiple gallon, Sterilite clear plastic tub with locking lid at Wal-Mart for $5 and filled it with a couple gallons of Evapo-Rust. After placing the heavily rusted tool inside the container (making sure it is fully submerged), I covered the top with cellophane. Then I place the the locking lid on top of the cellophane to minimize the evaporation of the Evapo-Rust. I left the rusted tool in the Evapo-Rust for 24 hours. After the 24 hours have elapsed, I used any dishwater soap, a green scrubbing pad, and water to clean off the black oxide and rust off the tool. I do not recall needing a second soaking of Evapo-Rust in the years using this product.

No. It's not a cleaner. It works through simple immersion.

I use it a lot. Great stuff. As others said, it can be reused. Also, I try to use as little as possible by filling as much negative space as possible with other objects.

Absolutely you can. I do, it works even better/faster in an ultrasonic.

I find it works much better if you needle scale and/or wire brush the thick rust off but it can be used over and over again. Electrolysis works very well for the really thick rust and takes some grease and oil off to. Either one you have to rinse with water after
