Is it a sledge hammer, or a sledgehammer?

What is the proper spelling for sledge hammer? Some have a space and some don't. Firefox and Google seem to think sledgehammer is the right spelling.

I am trying to find a sledge made in the USA which is the reason this came up. (Trusty Cook is too expensive and I would destroy the plastic face on their sledges.)

Peter Gabriel says it's "Sledgehammer":

I'd go find a good US-made head at a junk shop and clean it up and put a new hickory handle on it.
But that's just me. I hate fiberglass handles on tools.

Mine is spelled N-u-p-l-a.
;-)

It looks like webster spells "sledgehammer" all one word.

Epstein's had some short handle slides made in us. No idea the brand, but I love the one I got. Might check there too.

It may depend upon whether left handed or right handed.. Or is that lefthanded or
righthanded? Metricbolt?? Clawhammer? Screwdriver? Sledgehammer? Hmm; Sledgehammer and screwdriver didn't get underlined by a red line. Clawhammer did get underlined by a red line.. Time to oil My computer again.. The darn thing is doing some size discrimination on the spelling of hammers. Got sticky keys again also.. I have a pump can of ATF that should do the trick.. Should that be pumpcan? No, that got underlined with a red line also.. What size hammer are You looking for? Our local Ace Hardware has a good selection of handles, If You find a suitable head.

Does anyone call them a maul? I have had two six pounders for decades. There are times that a heavier size would be welcome; but I find a six pounder to be more user friendly..
Being I pound with a six pounder; should I just call it a pounder?

Darn hammer is more complicated that I figured??
