Is it common for entire threads to be deleted?

I'm new here. I participated in a thread about "Ever seen a business close due to being unable to find employees". Tons of great comments, and I spent a decent amount of time posting my own replies. Now it seems as though the entire thing was deleted?

Is this common, for threads to be deleted out of nowhere?

There are some common sense rules about what you cannot post about, and you’re expected to be civil to others. Almost zero tolerance. Apparently someone went way too far.

Why not delete their individual replies, ban/warn them? It feels ... not great, that I spent time giving great advice and it's all yeeted

Makes a confusing mess of a thread.

You'll get used to it.

Eventually you'll realize you have plenty of glory for others to bask in, as I do.

Essh idk. Probably not worth emotionally investing in threads. I have paragraphs of **** typed up for that thread that, had I known would be flat out deleted I would not have taken the time to type up

that's a lot of work.

there have been multiple threads on this exact topic. if you do some searching, you'll see lots of info on the approach

a thread like that also had zero chance of not getting deleted

Is it because there is healthy debate? How can I figure out which threads are likely to be deleted?

There's a strong chance this thread will get locked or deleted as well. The rules are posted very clearly, certain topics (politics, religion etc) are forbidden and unfortunately some people stray over the line within generally good threads.

Questioning when a thread is disappeared isn't advised.

I read the rules, I still didn't understand why that thread was deleted. As a newcomer, I'm trying to figure out the lay of the land

This is a very well moderated forum with some pretty great information and talent getting shared. It's worth sticking around

Oh for sure. But as a long time listener, first time caller, I never noticed threads getting deleted like that. Most forums just lock them, so any decent info is saved and anyone being outrageous is there for everyone to see.

No worries, whoever takes the unpaid time to run this, I get it. Just trying to navigate the waters.

No. Self-checkout.
As long as it didn’t turn into a thread about people in the right lane driving between the minimum and maximum speed limit on the interstate being a hazard and menace to society.

Emotionally Investing in threads? That is hilarious!
Internet forums are the last place where any one should be emotionally invested. Real life is for emotional investment. A forum full of people with hidden identities may be a good place to pass time but nothing more. But, to each, his own.

to answer the OP's question, it has already been mentioned several times.
Yes, threads get deleted by Ryan, the owner of this site, as well as Moderators.
It can be very time consuming to clean up threads and still have them make sense . Lots of times a thread goes off the rails several times & it just gets locked or deleted. usually a deleted thread involved politics, religion, racism , but not always .
I had a thread that I started get deleted a few days ago by the Boss, it wasn't because of my post(s), but others .
No one gets preferential treatment
What you see as valuable content may not be in Ryans or the Mods eyes . even if it is, it's just far easier to delete it than than to clean it up to lock it, or even to have it go bad again...

Back in the old days when forums were new I sometimes harshly criticized dumb answers. A more experienced poster PM'd me and suggested moderation and kindness unless I wanted 1000 people to think I was an *******. It was good advice.
I find it better to post topics that align with the original intent of the forum and only provide answers when you have direct experience with the question at hand. Exceptions would be when we are having harmless fun, or are asking how your day is going.

Politics will kill a thread (and a poster) faster than grabbing both leads of a 12KV electric line with wet feet in a salt water pool... Hell, I've been concocting my own witty response to a thread, go to post it, and why, gee, it's just not there no more.

Used to bother me when I was but a whippersnapper of a skimp, now it's a duck on water. Salt Water. Under the 12KV overhead lines... :shocking:

I find if I don't put a lot of thought into a lot of posts on a thread I can avoid getting hoovered into the dark zone... This is a place for gentle and jovial banter, not deep political discourse and argument.

That is a sure fire way to get a free vacation to band camp. Chill out and relax!!!!
