Is it possible to snap a bolt/fastener through using too much torque when breaking it

yes. excessive torque, in either direction, is a surefire way to break bolts and studs. how much it'll take is much less certain.

I have busted a few. Happens a lot on old exhaust systems but I recently had a couple of suspension arm mounting bolts give up. For some reason I call it "shearing" while if it breaks while installing I call it "torquing". Guess it depends on if it broke by stretching or twisting.

Yes. I hope for my exhaust flange bolts to come off easy, or snap off when I first start.

I hate it when I get almost to the end and then it breaks.

When using excessive torque, a fastener will stretch, snap or break, but sometimes the threads will strip first.

If replacing cultivator shovels or grader blades, I would rather over-torque the old nuts and break the bolts off, rather than trying to unscrew them. I prefer to use new hardware to assemble the new components.

That isn't the way I prefer to remove a head bolt :lol_hitti

Over-torquing a bolt while assembling any project is not in Your best interest.

The main reason I got a Snap-on 24" Ratchet was to break bolts. Faster than a impact and cleaner than a cutting torch.
Bolts with corrosion from fertilizer, silage acid or manure will break off easy.

Hell I've ripped the corner off flanges on exhaust systems using a Milwaukee fuel hex impact taking out a/f sensors, rusty heat cycled exhaust is all ways a pita to work on. Nut never broke free from the stud and stud didn't want to move, guess the rusty flange was the weak link in that case.

Only thing worse is water pumps on some engines, those thing rot to hell and shear as soon as you turn them. If your shearing it from torque something is keeping it from moving. That's when the blue tip wrench becomes your friend.

I read somewhere on the internet that the cheaper tools can break off a bolt. The quality tools from the truck brands have a built in torque limiting feature that they bend or break before the bolt will.

Last one I broke was a wheel stud that twisted off when I started a brake job on our old Grand Caravan. I hadn't noticed the jack legs at the tire place cross threaded the lug nut.
