I think so far the best suggestion I have ever heard would be to remove free parking from the new posts search. Or at the minimum make it an option so if people think it should be "gone", they can have it "gone".

I'd be sad then because I'd just never see Free Parking again. I refresh New Posts all day long and that's how I use GJ.

I know Free Parking has rules already, but the words "Free Parking" appears to be a fun/garage-related way of saying "off topic." Like it's a free-style or free from any one topic.

I believe every forum needs an off topic section. Every forum is its own community. People like to share off topic things with their community who share the same hobbies, interests, etc. There are some off topic things i dont share on GJ because I know GJ's members are not the audience/demographic. Same goes for other forums i visit.

There are a few people that I wish would never be seen in free parking again, you are not one of them. ;)

If you guys think free parking has drama, you should read stuff from the flooring section, that place is like the wild west.

Ryan made some changes some time ago and Free Parking is no longer visible unless you are logged into the forum. Search for things via GOOGLE and Free Parking does not show up.

These changes came about after some one that is a vendor made a complaint about a topic that has long gone.

Who knows?
simple fix, don't read it

This is where I stand on it as well.

I enjoy FP as I get to learn and communicate with other members on a variety of NON-garage related stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy tools, autos, and fab as much as anyone else. But I don't want to live and breathe it 24/7. FP does as much as anything else to build a sense of comradery as anything else on the site. True, it's also a big source of disagreement too, but you only have to look at peoples choice of COO and manufacturers to find an equal source of argument.

I personally hope we keep it. I know it's a thorn in the administrators eyes, (not to mention Ryans!) but it's also one of the things that keeps the GJ as unique as it is.

Sadly :( some times some people can not agree that they disagree and leave it at that.

I guess what we as Mods need here is something (more guidelines and ideas) to take back to Admin so we can make sure FP is what we all want that works for us all.
You mods do a good job on this forum. You are not going to please everybody all the time, and you will never have a rule set that covers every single possible situation.

I just don't see any upside to doing away with FP. I find FP to be a value-added part of GJ.

The craziest thing happens when I see an FP thread title that doesn't interest me... I don't click on it. Or in some cases I do click on it and after reading a few posts find the subject doesn't interest me so I hit the back arrow and move on.

Free Parking may need a bit of a cleaning up every now and then, but I don't think it's broken.

You can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time.

A spring clean perhaps ? We are getting close to Spring in my location.
A tidy up does happen every do often.

Maybe there should be a hall of shame, where the worst deleted threads go, that way people can see what gets a thread deleted.

In spring cleaning... i prefer to trim my bushes... not scrape and **** the yard... just a suggestion... I think the mods do a fantastic job... this is the only forum i frequent. (edit: only PG13 forum... I want to be honest)

I love the idea of a place where you could go to see "this is why they are banned..." You can even change the names to protect the future innocent or the forgiven.

One of the biggest problems that I have is that a lot of members have no sense of humor and no tolerance for any type of kidding. I know that tomfoolery is outlawed according to the rules, but without humor we might as well be robots.

I dont see an issue really. But I do agree it has mostly become off topic. you cant not have an off topic forum. The reason being is because people will inherently post off topic material no matter what.

Perhaps we need a purely off topic forum here. PG13 rated of course, but the prposed idea is its only for off topic stuff. Pimples on your thigh, your neighbor who called the cops on your, the cold you have and how to treat it, whatever. This way it appeases those who want to keep FP clean and those of us (me included) who wish to discuss other things. You cant not have an off topic forum, it simply doesnt work. If you do keep things strictly on topic to the forum like free parking then all you will do is delete or close many threads because they dont fit the mold of that forum.

I do agree politics should still be kept out, as all they ever do is lead to arguments.

Oh and one last thing:

As to the original poster: You need to sit back and relax. This isnt your message board, you dont create the rules and have ZERO real say in how its run. If you dont like something then dont click on it. No reason to get your ******* in a bunch and complain like a little baby over nothing. I dont care about peoples electrical work, tons of posts on that-I just dont click on the post.

It's like flying in a plane... we all are here for the ride... some think by shifting their weight in the seat it will alter the flight path of this forum.

As for humor... my wife said I'm not funny but it is funny being married to me.

With out the free parking area, I would not be here, I look at free parking first then to new post. I know loosing on person does not make any one worry, But if you piss off too many people then this place will die. I am sure that there is money to be make with G.J. or it would not be here. Please keep free parking. I have enjoyed my time here on G.J. and have learned so very much. I am not the most active member but I just keep on swinging as the ball gets tossed. First of all, other than your personal attack, I haven't noticed any posts here that would cause anyone to "sit back and relax". Everyone has just been expressing there opinion civilly.

Secondly, as a member here, it is my board and I have every right to suggest a discussion regarding the rules, content and any other policy that concerns it. If you somehow feel that because we may have different ideas on a subject that I can't express my wishes, then maybe it's you that needs to relax and rethink your position. Even those that can't live without FP have agreed that as written the rules are unenforceable, which is my biggest problem. It's pretty hard to only allow garage related topics and then add that it's ok to post anything you may talk about in a garage. Evidently the wording of the posting rules need to be addressed so that it is clear on what can or can't be posted. The other choice could be to set up a new section for those that need to discuss their everyday life, and leave free parking for the garage related topics. Since we are supposed to be changing the site in the near future, maybe now is the time to discuss this sort of thing.

The only problem with a discussion is that there is no democracy here, the last I checked this is more of a monarchy and I mean no offense to Ryan. He is the one that truly keeps the lights on and at the end of the day he is the one that will make any and all decisions.

That's true. He also scans this section and listens to the Mods.

You get nothing, this isnt a democracy, you dont own the board, moderate or whatever. Whatever the owner wants to do is what goes. Sorry thats the way it goes. You have ZERO say in how things are run here. So **** it up buttercup and stop whining.

Im hostile cause you are complaining about nothing. Not a single person has expressed the same concern you have. As I said earlier: dont like the posts, dont click on them. If thats not possible then perhaps you need to get a reality check?

There is no free country here. Its a monarchy as Strouty already described. You get no say in any of it.
