I have this ancient compressor that the motor has gone bad on. Is it worth putting a new motor on it, or should it be scrapped? It is 2hp 240 volt motor.

Did you use it before the motor went bad? Did it meet your needs? If so, it should be worth repairing if you can find a used motor or a good deal on a new replacement. One source - https://www.surpluscenter.com/Electric-Motors/

If you obtained the unit broken, I wouldn't spend much to later find that the tank leaks or the compressor has problems. Sell on craig's list for $50 or so.

Yes, the tank. I retired a similar unit a few years ago after having a look inside the tank. I would open the drain and see what comes out, then stick a bore scope inside and see how good/bad it is before spending any money.

what symptoms makes you think "the motor has gone bad?
could it just be the start cap or centrifugal switch needs to be replaced?

I agree on careful tank inspection..........I also had two of those, both developed pin hole leaks in the bottom radius two inches of the tank at about 20 years old. Wild guess but that could be 30-40 years old ? Yes, they were drained regularly.

No pressure in the tank.......Tap on the bottom with pointed hammer.......mine were scary how thin the metal was from the rust.

There are other prior threads on this exact topic on this model and vintage compressor.

It's the size. They made them for years, someone probably still does but the 3 hp, 60 tank, upright has dominated the market, bigger units not tend to be so overworked.

Some pressure washers the same, used to make 9 and 11 hp, just dome make them in some of those sizes, 13 has dominated.
I got a couple buds got/had those comps. They sold a lot of them and had 2x the power of the 120v models. Over the years seen 3 or half a dozen blown up pumps. They were big enough to almost do the work so they were ran hard, ran long.
