Is it worth selling tools ?

Do you lot sell the tools you don't use and put the money towards new tools?

I've got 2 mac cordless impact guns, one 1/2 and one 3/8 and I rarely use them. Recently Ive been thinking I might sell them and buy more tools or a better box with the money.

I agree with the above, unless it's Snappy or another premium brand, knipex whatever you may have, then no.

I have sold things that I did not need, at prices that barely covered shipping and PayPal charges.
I did not benefit from the sale, but the buyer did.

Truck brands are pretty easy to sell. Craftsman stuff goes away but anything less is tough unless you sell in large quantities.

I've sold a bunch of stuff on here and ebay but honestly it's not really worth it to sell hand tools. By the time you pay for shipping, ebay and paypal fees you're left with just a few dollars.

I try to give away as many as I can to my dad, brother, friends, etc.

In your particular case, I think it's worth it to sell a couple of things you aren't using.

Cordless impact guns will be a tough sell if they're older models with less powerful batteries. Check ebay for completed listing and to identify the price you can expect to get for them. If you could sell them at work that might be an easy way to move them out. Otherwise the classifieds here or ebay. Good luck!

^^^ I do that too and usually say "surprise me if you come across something you think I could use". I don't really expect anything but a friend gave me a really nice used body hammer for an old drill I gave him. I was more than happy.

I agree. I understand the truck brands, but I have never understood the market for Craftsman stuff? Even prior moving production to Asia, Craftsman was on the lower end of the spectrum for quality. On anything but truck tools, you can expect to lose your ***. I only post tools for what I'm willing to sell them for, and anything less I will usually just keep them or add them to the back up box.

If I buy a full toolbox I usually sell all the craftsman stuff as a single lot and it goes away within hours. Selling single tools is a waste of time.

Yea but they have overhead and wont give you much unless its the same truck brand.

Makes no sense to me but okay. Maybe it makes sense if you buy a lot of high cost stuff (snap on mainly because the other truck brands don't really maintain their value on the internet). But then again still good to keep for a once in a while.

Maybe sell the 3/8 and keep the 1/2. Not going to get a ton of money for it man, certainly nothing comparable to what you paid.

Money can be made by selling quality tools on eBay (whether they are ones you personally used, or ones you bought to sell).

Household-quality tools are not worth trying to sell except at a garage sale.

If you do this for awhile, you learn exactly what does and does not sell, and if it does, for how much.

The most profitable items in my experience are ones that are of high quality and what I would call somewhat specialized, so that they appeal to people who work in certain trades. The more they cost new, the more they will bring. If they are very "usual" tools or highly specialized ones, they are harder to sell.

IMHO its not a money making endeavor. Some tools can bring money but if you figure in time and gas plus, if your the type of guy that cleans up what he sells then not really. I only buy when I find something I need or want and then Ill pick up other things to sell just to offset what I have spent. After all this is an addiction. But Im sure there are guys that do well at it.

See what kind of trades you can make with people you know. You did say you wanted to sell tools you didn't use to get tools you needed. It'll get you away from the computer and ebay and craigslist and paypal and the post office for awhile too.

I've had far better success, I think for both parties, trading in general, at least on GJ.

There are some exceptions, but generally that has been the case.

With the abundance of the dime store mentality for cheap tools like HF and Craftsman, and other store brand;;;;;; how big is the group that is actually looking for; and is willing to pay a higher price for SK, Snap On, or industrial grade tools?????????? I'm in this group, and seem to have allot of company..

Target your sales to a split group?

Sell trashed out premium tools and try and bait a sucker?

Be totally full of **** and try to sell for over new price?

Try to convince buyers your tools are something extra special?

Just "sale dese tool thingies"

Maybe those are a few things not to do.

For me, Cripe has closeout prices on eBay that rival the used tool prices.

A visit to the ProTo website results in discounts that rival used prices on eBay.

For eBay, I try to filter the not wants out, and at times type in the specific tool I am looking for..

I will not buy a pile of miscellaneous stuff to get one tool..

I have landed some fantastic buys on eBay.

I like the buy it now, as there is no drama/ I'll bid if I want something, and will not piss around with mini bids... If I want it, I put my max bid in and walk away...

When looking over a tool on eBay, I check the sellers other items, if they have something I am interested in, the combined shipping is a savings.

We have so many options for purchases,,,,, and the sellers have a large audience.....Us

Should anyone have a complaint??? NA Well, I don't ,,, bbut I would not want to be the seller and get darn near nothing for a tool, pay the eBay fees, and package the thing.. not to mention taking pictures and placing the ad...

Selling locally would eliminate the auction fees, packing and shipping fees... Craig's List has worked well for the larger equipment I have sold... eBay and Craig's List have both worked well as far as My purchasing tools.. Me sell tools?? no,, I have two generations to hand tools down to..
so I get to weasel out of selling any tools..

i try not to buy any tools or equipment i dont have a use for.

it has happened a couple times in the past, i sold a plasma cutter i really had no use for for a nice profit.
unwanted hand tools i pick up in lots or trades, i usually "gift" to a tool poor friend.
