Is quickcrete up to the task?

Ive never used it before but i used to do concrete for a living. My grandpa just gave me 15 bags of it. I want to make my driveway wider. I figured on pouring 6in thick due to abuse. Will quickcrete do the job. I dont want it to look alot different than the regular concrete already there.

Functionally, yes, it should do the job. Aesthetically, it's hard to match existing concrete.

And I don't envy you having to mix 15 bags.

Free is free but i but my shoulder is sore for a week. MY main question about looks is, does it look way off from redimix concrete.

There is not a lot of difference in the appearance as long as you finish it the same. There will always be slight variances in appearance but it should not stick out like a sore thumb if you do it right.


15 80 pound sacks of quickcrete will only cover 18 square feet if you go 6" thick. To cover your 80 square feet you would need 67 bags total. I would not want to to mix that much in a wheel barrow.

Yeah you could rent a mixer but by the time you paid for that and then bought 42 bags more you probably would have been better off getting a truck to bring it all.

That is what I would do. Put you 15 sacks on craigslist or something surely someone needs them for fence posts, take that money, and the money you would spend on a mixer and 42 more bags and hire a truck to bring it.

I'd use it maybe to pour a pad by a walkout door or repair a section of sidewalk.

Also, concrete will go off if it sits in the bags too long. We used to put a shovelful or two of portland in with the premix, as a fortifier.

Also, fifty bags is 4000 pounds, that is two trips for pickup in the average truck.

I would throw the ready mix in the bottom of the pour, and have the rest trucked in.

Besides, if you tried to self mix this much concrete from bags - even with a rented mixer, you better be up to working continuously for several hours or you will end up with cold joints. No mater what it will be greener for an extended period. Added concrete will not match existing concrete ever, or for a long *** time.

I'd think that it would be a whole lot easier to have a cement truck provide that much of a pour.

Years ago I did several small jobs with quickcrete. First was a pad for a plastic tool shed, then was one for the barbecue, one for the close line, then the trash cans. Then the hot tub.

I have wanted to do a cement run down my drive way up to along the side of the house attaching it to the trash can pad. But have realized I do not want to work that much with quickcrete ever again. It will be a truck in next time.
