I'm still finding my way around this forum so sorry if this isn't the right place to post this.

I was at Tractor Supply today to pick up some paint and a few other things, and I noticed a product called Rust Kutter.

Has anybody tried it? It sure is a whole lot cheaper than Por-15.

I would be using it on a jeep frame.

I don't know. I'd like to try it, but at $50....How much is the Por-15?

It does give me the idea to spray the EvapoRust ($20) onto some stuff I need to paint and see if that works. Rust is probably to thick though.

About three times that much.

But actually, what the tractor supply website says and what it says on the bottle and on every other website I found, don't match up.

Tractor supply describes it as working similer to evaporust, by actually dissolving the rust.

The bottle says it works more like por-15, it says that it causes rust to break down into phosphate, for easy painting.

I think I'll pick up some to try, I'm going to wire brush the outside of the frame, (its a box frame) but I'll need some sort of chemical to use on the inside.

Sounds like Rust Kutter is like Naval Jelly (phosphoric acid, the bad-for-you stuff in Coca Cola). It prepares a rusty metal surface for painting by turning the rust to a stable ferric-phosphate. That's an old technology for dealing with rust.

Your RK is a very different product from the newer chelating compounds (such as EOR) that are favored for restoring tools. Chelation takes off the rust and leaves bare metal, EOR does not convert rust to a black ferric phosphate.

If I were painting I'd definitely use a Naval Jelly type compound for ease and time savings. EOR is not for spraying on, it's for dunking into. EOR won't stay on a vertical surface.

There is a new "jelly" version of a chelation product sold by Lee Valley tools, search here on GJ for "chelation".

IDEA: Go buy a small bottle of Naval Jelly and see if you like the results. If you do, maybe a big bottle of RK is exactly what you want.

Tractor supply also sells a smaller $20 bottle of that stuff.
I think I try that one out to see what I think.

Any ideas for spraying it in the frame?

I used the Krud Kutter rust remover paint prep ($3.00 @ Big Lots) It smells and works like a slightly milder naval jelly They may thin it to allow it to be sprayable

I finally bought a bottle of rust kutter a while ago, and I guess I'm pretty happy with it.
It takes several coats, but it does seem to work.

I stuck a leaf blower in one end of my jeep frame before spraying it in, and that did a great job of spreading it all around.

I just need to pick up some spray paint to coat it with, then I guess we'll see how long it holds up.
