Is there a M5 thread restorer?

I just realized my craftsman thread restorer kit stops at M6 bolts.
I need to "clean up" a M5 x 0.8 pitch.

Is my only option to buy a tap?

I have never seen one. I use Time-serts for that size. Its a very popular size screw on Husqvarna chain saws.

Can I cut 2 slots on a spare M5 bolt with a dremel cutting wheel?
will that create burrs that make matter worse?

I have a tap from HF tap kit but the quality does not look precise at all, could make things worse. I just need to get out the debris and maybe realign the thread.

If it was larger bolt size id say go ahead but dealing that small you could make a small problem bigger. If your worried buy a better tap.

Use a triangle file or the corner of a flat file. Ive done it many times on large bolts and odd thread sizes. I prefer to cut 4 slots but on something that small 2 or 3 might be better. Dont cut them too deep or you risk break the bolt off since its so small. You could probably even flat file the threads off 2 opposing sides since putting slices across the threads might be difficult

Works great, just dont force it.

If you can, use a thread chaser/restorer rather than a tap. No mater the quality of the tap, they can sometimes cut threads that you don't want Ken.
