Is there a pit thread?

I am curious to see other pics of pits. My mother's house is a converted 7-car garage built around 1925, the last two bays remain (last one over the pit) after the first 5 were converted into living space in the 50's. Will take/find some pics.

I have seen occasional pics of pits but I have not seen a compilation. I had one and miss it.

There have been a couple pit threads. Overall, you'll find pits are not very popular here at GJ. They're considered dangerous and obsolete.

That said, I have one and wouldn't trade it for a lift given my space constraints. I spent all day in it today, actually.

And you're still alive!:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil

Maybe they're not so dangerous after all?

I have neither and will probably end up with a mid-rise scissor lift but would be very happy with a pit, or a lift. They all have their dangers but used correctly they're all as safe as each other.

The pit in my workshop is over 30ft long.
I use it often but it was designed for truck use in the old days.
So it is not deep enough for working on my low cars.
I run them up onto 4in blocks and that works fine.

I have one  it's 15ft long, 3ft+ wide by 6ft deep approx, not sure just how old this is as it appears to be built after the house was which is 1902 and i don't use it. :D

I think the post above mine is a very good description of a US vs a UK version :)

There have been a number of pit discussions here over the years, but the problem is they're hard to find because the site's search function doesn't work for three letter words. Use Google to search the site instead and you'll find them easier, like this:

"pit" site:www. garagejournal.com/forum/

(I put a space after 'www' so it wouldn't turn into a hot link, just remove the space if you cut and paste.) You can replace pit with whatever words you want to search for.

About 15-20 years ago, I had a friend who built a garage with a pit. Talk about a hassle !

Because he wanted lighting and power in the pit, the building inspectors made him put all wiring in EMT (good idea) and all switched and light fixtures that were commercial "explosion proof".

Our old RR shop had pits.
Every once in a blue moon, some genius would drive a fork truck into one.
Maybe they should have signed up for the optional....eye care....coverage??
