Is there a way to permanently hide specific threads?

I did a quick search and did not find anything. Is there a way to hide specific threads so that they're not constantly in my feed if they do not apply to anything that I am looking at in a normal basis?

I use the Ignore feature. Ignoring users hides all their content, including their threads. While the Ignore feature is an improvised way of hiding threads, or, of customizing your own user experience through exclusion, which is not really its intent, and using it that way has some obvious undesirable implications (more on that below*), it works.

There are several users who tend to only discuss vintage machines, for example. Grinders, block grinders, pre-block grinders, umpteen different kinds of machines that Sears sold under the Craftsman brand in the 30s and 40s, decals for machines, etc, all subjects I have zero interest in that always tended to be bumped to page 1 on the vintage board. With the old software it wasn't so bad. Maybe 3 or 4 threads in a list of 50 active threads. With the new software enlarging everything, giving GJ an extremely zoomed in field of view, those 3 or 4 threads, and often 7 or 8 when they were hot and trending, were quite literally taking up the entire screen in forum view, my preferred view, forcing me to constantly scroll down. By ignoring a few of the usernames who started a lot of those threads, it hides all those threads for me. I never see them show up in my forum thread list. My view of the vintage forum is essentially scrubbed of machines. Ditto planes and some other things. It is a vintage mechanics hand tools forum only, in my Ignored view.

* The potential downside is if a user has very diverse interests. My Ignoring them would also hide their content in threads I actively Watch and participate in. Fortunately, that has not been the case. None of the guys deep diving on machines and starting those kinds of threads are also big aficionados of 1920s Billmont socket sets or SK tools etc. Their interest is pretty exclusive to machines. So it works.

I just want to ignore threads, not users.
Of course. I don't want to ignore users as a way of hiding threads, either, but again, it successfully achieves the same result in an improvised way. There are many cases where that would have side-effects, as I pointed out. But in cases where certain users are exclusively associated with certain topics you already pay no attention to, there are probably users and threads you are ignoring (translation: not reading or following) without the aid of a software feature. If you Ignore them, they are hidden.

Not trying to persuade you. Just clarifying.

I asked Ryan about Hiding threads or extending the Ignore feature to threads when 2.0 launched last year, as a sort of opposite effect of Watching, and he indicated it was not feasible, if I recall correctly.

^ It's probably not a feature built into the software package. I do not recall seeing anything along the same line on other forums I've been on, most of which used some variation of the "phpBB" software.

I found this thread while looking for the reverse. Somehow, there is an active thread (“What did you do in your garage today”) that I know is there, but cannot see.

I don’t see a way to hide threads. So how to unhide that which cannot be hidden?

Found it. Somehow I ignored mayhemman, who started the thread. Don’t remember doing it, and his status is banned. Maybe those are related.

Over the years I have ignored a few members who irritated me. Most everyone that I have ignored have ended up on the banned list.

I too wish there was a way to mark threads as not interested or done with it.
