what ticks me off is the increase in price you pay for metric vs. SAE.

Same process to make both, just the pitch is different..

I've been running to the local ACE hardware to finish up a swap I'm doing, and yes metric hardware are quiet expensive. I figured I'd just have to **** it up and keep it up until I finished the swap. Well I was at oreily's returning a belt I ended up not using and wandered into the fastener section, and I found a "value pack" for "asian vehicles" total 128 pieces Dorman part number 799-305.

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/DOR1/799305.oap?ck=Search_N0806_-1_-1&pt=N0806&ppt=C0142

Since I can't find anything listing what parts I'll add it here:
Cap Screws
8 m6-1.0x16mm
8 m6-1.0x20mm
6 m6-1.0x30mm
6 m8-1.25x16mm
4 m8-1.25x20mm
10 m8-1.25x30mm
4 m10-1.25x20mm
2 m10-1.25x30mm
2 m10-1.25x35mm

Washers
20 m6
16 m8
10 m10

Nuts
16 m6
12 m8
4 m10

I do not believe these are grade 8 or hardened fasteners but if you're not looking specifically for those these might fit the bill.

It's not like buying cashews , peanuts and pistascios at Costco sadly. More like buying coffee in bulk.

:)
Except Grade 2,5,8 and some specialty products are just like that at TSC. It's awesome. It lets me have all my standard hardware on hand without a huge investment...saved my **** tonight in fact.

So, who does fasteners by the pound in metric? Not buy a 5lb box, I mean just like the cashews and peanuts...

+1 on Ace...I know they are expensive, when you have one or two pieces, but they sell 'by the box' too. Go to the counter and ask for a quote for larger quantities. They will call their supplier right then and print out a quote for you.

If you are anywhere near Sacramento, CA, check out Blue Collar Supply. I haven't looked for metric, but they have fabulous 'by the pound' prices on fasteners.

I go to Blue Collar Supply at least twice a month. Great deals on SAE fasteners by the pound, in most grades. Even stainless! I always buy 20~25% more of any fasteners I need, so I am continually building up inventory, too.

It's hard to find any fasteners sold by the pound these days and nearly impossible to find them in metric.

By stocking large amounts of fasteners, the onus is on the store or chain to keep things in stock and that becomes a cost and inventory nightmare if not managed correctly nevermind the cost and profit margins. Most places don;t want to touch that unless selling B2B and in BIG amounts.

I;ve been involved with a mfgr. where monthly we buy metric fasteners in boxes of 2000 for each sized bolt, nut and washer from M6 thru M12 and a few odd sizes for a production floor.

Keep in mind that for each size I mentioned above (M6, M8, M10, M12) we keep every length for each from 10mm up to 45mm in 5mm increments. That's 2000 pieces min. for each size and length mind you.
And then there are a few stocked in fine thread sizes too.

The best price is buying that way thru a local distributor who buys directly from the fastener mfgr. and that's a ****-ton of hardware.

Without buying in that amount there are few places willing to give you a good price without buying by the 100's or 1000's. Maybe as more metric fasteners are used (especially in vehicles), the access to better prices will be easier.

We use a ton of metric up here in Canada. Post a list of what you need and I can maybe point you in the right direction and then just get it shipped down to you.

Just thought-check out Princess Auto in the Toronto area online and you may find it all there as they are pretty inexpensive on stuff like that.

Advance Auto and Amazon both have something similar, just with 514 pieces

The Dorman website contains this PDF link, showing the contents (by the way, Amazon sells this same kit)

I don't know if this allowed or not since I'm mostly a lurker, but am a fastener salesman for Hill Threaded Products in Bakersfield, CA. We sell all sorts of bolts, safety, and industrial supplies. Let me know if I can help.

If this seems like soliciting, please delete this post. I come on here to look at ideas for my own garage, not sell. Just happens to be about what I do.
