Two are toast for certain. See about load testing the other two to determine if you need 2 or 4 new ones. Consider replacing all 4.

Many online sources available.

A little hammer and dolly work and they'll be right as rain...
Be careful doing that. The case might crack. In situations like that, I find softening up the plastic with a torch makes it easier. Often just squeezing it back in shape with a vise makes for less hammer and dolly work.

Dead as a door knob, you might have to replace all 4. This is for a 48v ups backup right. Could have other battery cells that go bad. The way they charge is 48v or in this case aprox 56v in series you know how it goes next… basically cascade the damage till one cell opens.

You can take a chance with just replacing the bad one but you will need to make sure it’s the same brand and capacity. And use a smart charger and recharge all 4 before connect them back to service

Anyways

This is an old SMT1000 2U. If you don't mind just rebuilding the pack, just buy the cells yourself

4 end up at $66 with free shipping from here as they offer bulk discount

Yeah I always just replace all 4, I'll keep the 2 "good" ones around for messing around with though. I've had good luck giving a bunch of old small batteries are a core refund on car batteries, lets me keep an old still half good car battery for something useful

Looks like you got lucky and caught it before the batteries started leaking all over everything.

Someone may correct me, but I don't think there is anything to leak at this point. Its already a Gel when new, and once they get this bad, they are dry as a bone

I'm thinking some bondo could help too

I'm thinking if I heat it in the oven first, it will be soft so I can just push it all back where it should be

This UPS has them connected up as 24v actually, I am tempted to just get 2 larger 12v batteries and connect them outside of the case. Would be easier to swap! But yeah I always replace all 4, never a good idea to do just 2

I don’t have the same ups as the op or the model number, the ancient ones I have are 48v 2 pack of 24v 20AH I think. Even thought the packs are 24v the system is 48v. So….

Is your unit rack mounted? The desktop modules usually use those huge 20ah batteries, which seem to hold up better

If I recall, the 1000 VA units like this are 24v, but the 1500 VA units are 48v, if I remember correctly that is

I just remember it is a 3000va or something decommission ones and stopped using once the spare batteries all went bad. At least the old ups brand seems to over charge them. Replacement are $$$$$$. Not worth it. Super heavy as in at least 70 to 100lb without the batteries. Seems to be rack mounted. Let me check in a few.

In your case, if it is 24v just make sure both batteries are fully charge and same brand and capacity before inserting bsck to service. If it is 48v then all 4 fully charge same brand and capacity.

I used to recharge them with the auto battery charger in agm mode if you don’t have gel cell mode

Price the batteries out on their own! The APC packs are super expensive, just rebuild it

Check the model too, might be double conversion, if it is, keep it

A blowtorch and a hydraulic press also might help flatten 'em out. Get 'em a little squishy and force 'em back into alignment. See, the problem is that you've lost rectangularity, so the electrons get all confused and hung up in the lumps and wrinkles, and they can't leave the battery.

.... and seriously, I'm batting somewhere under .500 with replacing UPS batteries, so I've entirely given up on the idea. At least half the time, there's also a problem somewhere in the other electrical gubbins that was either caused by or was the cause of the lead-acid batteries pooping out. Sometimes stuff like a popped capacitor or whatever smells pretty rank, sometimes there's no telling what happened. Most of the time, I just recycle the old UPS and pop for a new one. They seem to go around four years, about the same as lead-acid car batteries.

In your case, this is a pro-(ish) level rackmount piece of equipment, so a little bit of a gamble is worthwhile, and maybe the electrical bits are hopefully better quality than the stuff in consumer-grade desktop UPS units. And it looks like the display is working, which bodes well. Your odds are somewhat better than even that it will come back to life when proper (rectangular) batteries are in play.

I had to pry on some old APC 1500 units more than that before. When the batteries leak acid, then you know its bad. APC unit never failed its monthly battery test.

They came out of one of my trucks. Guess they froze this winter. Hadn't used it since maybe November.
