Electrical Motor 10 HP. RPM per minute - 1755 PH -3 Volts - 208-230/460 Serial #G40420/A04 A042R094M ....... this is how its written in the ad is it 3 phase or regular 220? thanks ahead of time,mike.

This is what gives it away.

208-230/460

Anything with 460 is typically 3 phase.

If you need to run that motor and don't have 3ph power, Baldor makes small adjustable speed drives that convert your standard 120/240 to 3ph. They are not cheap, but would be great for driving machine tools.

Another indicator is that the HP is more than 7 1/2. Single phase motors of over 7 1/2 hp are available, but not common. My power company in NW Washington will not allow single phase motors over 7 1/2 HP. I don't know how they can tell, but they were very firm about it.

They can tell because high current single phase motor loads throw their 3 phase 3 wire balanced load grid off balance. This off balance forces extra currents through the ground, instead of through the 3 power wires on the top of the poles.
