There is a Delta/Rockwell drill press and rotary table for sale locally and I am trying to decide if I want to drive out (1hour) to look at it and if I like it, what is a reasonable price. The owner can't tell me the model number and I can't seem to find a direct match on internet to check price against.

I am looking for a drill press that is vintage/cool but useful for my shop.

thoughts?

I don't understand the rotory part but it probably doesn't matter ...Its already gone...We're you refering to variable speed...?Oh, TABLE...that"s common most, have it ...If it's still there Get it, you won't be sorry...I swear...I,d love to have it...

It's an OK price. It is a good drill press, 15" delta. It has the delta light which alone brings $100. That drill press with variable speed is rather rare. I have the same 15" model, but it is the step pulley model and mine has the large production table. That one has the standard wood working table.

The MT2 extension you see there is actually an accessory (rare accessory ~$50) that screws onto the spindle. If you plan on putting large MT2 bits in there and drilling, don't. It is just not that rigid. You will need to get a JT33-34C which is a chuck with a threaded collar or a MT2 to JT33 adapter and a chuck. Either way you are looking at needing a chuck. (~$50)

The rotary table is a bit random. I have never used a rotary table on a drill press. On the mill, yes, but not on a drill press. I supposed it could be done, but I am not sure if that little table would like the weight of the rotab. Then again, it is hard to tell the size of the rotary table from the pics.

If you like the press, go for it. If it was me I would look for a larger (17" Old delta or clausing) before I spend $500 on that. JMHO

Things to check when purchasing...

=Bearing noises. For $500 is should be really good (no noise). However every older machine I have bought has needed a few bearings.

=Spindle runout. Those MT2 Extensions act as a lever arm for the tiny spindle on little bump allows the spindle to be really tweaked.

For the money I would much rather have this...

I also have a 17" just like that, mine is older with the cast iron belt guard, but other than that same drill press.

The 17" is SO much heavier and more robust. Plus that one comes with a chuck. It is a dedicated metal working model. The spindle on the 17" is a full MT2 solid, so you can chuck up MT2 bits and not worry about it.

Or this, it is the non VS version of your first press

Looks pretty nice to me, but I'm no guru.

Someone in-the-know can chime in regarding what that Rotary Table is worth - - - likely much more than plain jane table.

CL listing is still up . . . pics below.

Also that is not just a rotary table. It is a compound table with a rotary on top of it. It would be real handy on a drill press if you wanted to do small parts.

It will move in the x and y direction as well as rotate about its center axis. I wish the seller would post the diameter or some specs on it. New they are NOT cheap. Used, depends on size, condition and local market. Probably could easily get $100 out of it on clist.

I don't think that drill press has a gear rack for raising and lowering the table. Delta didn't use them on the wood working tables for the smaller presses. Keep in mind if it does not have a rack, with that compound table on the drill press table. Moving it up and down would be a real chore. And you would be relying on the friction between the clamp and column to hold all of the weight.

Listed as as 4000+rpm says woodworking to me. As a metal worker I'm more interested in the minimum speed.

Those varispeed DP's will usually get down to metal cutting speeds no problem. (unless maybe for a larger hole saw)

Together with the 3 way table I'd say its a good price (Assuming the quill is tight, and runnout is decent. bearings are an easy fix...), ask about a chuck though, I'll bet he has one for it.
