I was at a neighborhood party over the weekend, and one of my neighbors told me that a guy was just finishing his epoxy floor. I've been thinking of doing this/having it done for a few months. So after a few more Jack and Cokes, we went to take a look and it looked good. He measured my garage and gave me a quote.

All Prep work: power wash, de-greaser, scrub, etc.
640 sq ft

Rustoleum Epoxy Shield $795 2 part water based
Clearcoat with anti-skid $335 2 part solvent

Just checking to see what the going rate is...

You can go to home depot and buy the material and rent equipment like pressure washer and do it yourself for so much cheaper.

I offer installation of epoxy products and would say that is a fair price. In my neck of the woods a typical three coat system would install for about $3.50-$4.00 per square foot including materials. What type of service warranty (if any) are they offering? Self installation is always a more cost effective route, if you don't mind doing the labor.

You can buy a 2.5 car garage kit of the Rustoleum Epoxyshield (water based) at Home Depot for $99. In your case, it looks like you would need 3 of the regular kits or one of the 2.5 kits and 1 regular. Even if you have to rent a powerwasher, your going to save a lot of money by doing it yourself.

Before going down this path, be sure to read ALL of the previous threads on floor coverings. It appears that the Epoxyshield Professional series is recommended more (from what I can tell) than the water based one.

Thanks for the replies. Actually, the Jack really made the flakes "pop". I appreciate the suggestions about doing it myself. It is something that I could tackle, but time is my enemy. With 2 small kids, I don't think I could quarentine the gargage and get the uninterupted time I would need to do a good job. I will definately check on a warranty and ask for a price on the commercial grade. Are there any drawbacks to doing one half of the garage at a time? It would be nice to move everything to one side at a time rather than looking like I am having a 3 day garage sale.

I am doing my garage half at a time. I have expansion joints in mine that I am using for my separation point. I have a 4 year old, so understand the difficulty in keeping them out. However, I have watched many videos on the web showing how to put the epoxy down and I think you could make it if you put the right video on for the kids to watch while you are coating the floor.

Good videos here:

Note: I am not endorsing their products - simply thought their videos were good. I am intrigued by their glow-in-dark flakes though. :)
