It's right in the middle of the garage floor next to that central I-beam. I haven't messed with it since I haven't even begun cleaning out my garage, but at some point I'll have to address it.

I would assume that it is, rather safe than sorry. I had a gas heater in my bathroom and when we turned the gas on, water shot out of it. the previous owner did the plumbing and crossed pipes. I would not trust what it looks like, be carefull.

Yeah, I'm not planning on opening the valve anytime soon. I need to get an electrician in before I insulate and put up drywall, looks like I'll have someone come and look at this as well.

Although, I suppose as long as it works I can get a heater set up, which is handy.

I would say it looks like a Gas pipe to me . Do yourself a favor before you have alot of people in there working and take the fitting off the top of it and put a cap on it . That way even if the shut off is accidentaly turned on it wont leak :D.

Knowing my luck I'll do that when that beat up old fridge the old owner left me throws a spark and I'll blow the top off my garage.

I said crack it not open it :) It might be dead and you can remove it :) You could even put a balloon on it and see if it starts to fill it. Then take it outside then smell it :p

Hmmm, filling balloons with natural gas could be amusing in and of itself.

Now I'm DEFINITELY going to blow the roof off my garage.

It sure might be a gas line so use plenty of caution. It also could be an air line that was routed to that post where previously a air hose (reel, coil) connected. It wouldn't be the first time a gas valve was used on an air line.

I would just pound on it a few times with a big hammer. That will clear stuff up.
