I'm in the market for a new compressor, currently have a craftsman 33gallon oilless. Its only like 6cfm at 90psi and its really not cutting it anymore. I found this one on Craigslist not to far from me.

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/grd/1864902532.html

I know Jenny makes Emglo compressors and i researched it the best i could, the it specs out at 9.8cfm@125psi i don't know what the cfm would be at 90psi, but i know its more than 10 and most of the 60 gallon comps i'm finding spec out at around 10.2cfm at 90 psi.

Here's the link to Jenny's website, i'm not sure if this compressor is the k15a-30 or the k2a-30. I THINK maybe the k2a since he says its a 2hp motor. But either of them seem pretty good.

So should I pick this one up, or go for a compressor with a larger tank?

By the way, my general use is normally impacts, ratchets, paint guns, grinders, saws and a few other random things like blowing down, and airing up tires and such. Basically if its automotive i do it. Size isn't everything so long as the cfm meets my needs and its not insanely loud like cman i have.

That too much for that compressor. If you are going to be using a paint gun for painting something large (like a car) you need more compressor.

If your craftsman is down on performance you can buy the rebild kit for the pump for 25 dollars through Sears. About 10 minutes to install the new rod, piston and sleeve. Comes with new gaskets (Orings) as well

nah, performance is perfectly fine, i just can't keep up with tools and its so loud, its in a separate room and I can still hear it like its in the garage with me.

I was thinking about that rotary screw one, but its pretty big...100 gallons is way over kill, but its a good deal.

so i FINALLY got some specs on this compressor.

30 Gallon, 230v, 2 running hp, 13.1cfm@135psi 14+cfm@90psi

I'm still struggling to decide if this is a good buy or not. Its the same size as my current current compressor, but only goes to 135, but moves a TON more air at given psi's. And consumption has never been a problem for me. I don't run a blast cabinet on a regular basis, and my current one kept up with my spray guns pretty well. But would it still be smarter to buy a 60gallon one?

I'd rather have quality over quantity. Sure Campbell Hausfeld is quality, but Emglo/Jenny is better. But for 40 bucks more I can have a 60 gallon CH, but its only rated at 10.2cfm@90psi. Is the extra CFM REALLY that much more important for running tools like die grinders and stuff?

CFM matters more than tank size. Go for the compressor with the most CFM.

A 100hp car won't go faster if you double its gas tank size from 15 gal to 30 gal, but it will go a lot faster if you double the engine HP to 200hp.

for my area thats a terrible buy. $400 would get you a good used 60-80 gal 5hp. Likewise thats also awfully close to what the brand new 60gals from lowes or home dope cost any day of the week.

I wouldnt pay more than $200 for that.

on that note, i looked at the brand new 60 gallon CH from lowes tonight, and its 439, less cfm, and needs another 50-60 dollars in fittings and gauges to make it ready. Where as the old Kobalts were plug and play.

The K2A-30 compressor brand new retails for 961 direct from Jenny(who makes that Emglo in question), this one according to the seller has less than 50 hours on it, and he's selling it for 400 bucks. I think its a decent deal, i would 'like' a 60 gallon, but i've never ran into a scenario where 30 gallons wasn't enough, it was always cfm that was my problem.

I don't run my grinders non stop, its usually cut something real quick and that's it.

your call, i'd just wait and keep scanning craigslist. Like i said for my area thats not a good deal. Tons of older 60-80gal Ingersol Rands, occasionally a speedair or quincy, go for that [~$400] around my parts.

That operating RPM [1140] is also quite high so you may want to listen to it first before you purcase. Could be on the louder side. Likewise because the tank is small it will be running more often than a pump on a 60 depending on how much air your job requires. Remember heat kills compressors and also causes more moisture.

how much compressor do you need to paint a car? wouldn't a 10+ cfm @ 90 be much higher at the ~30psi for hvlp?

i live in a city man, big compressors for cheap don't show up all that much around here. I've been scanning CL for some time now. 400 for a almost 1000 dollar compressor seems like a good deal to me. As for sound, it can't be louder than my oilless, not to mention its in a separate room that has a/c.

The ch and husky 60 gallon models are nice, but i can't justify the fact that after spending 500 bucks on them, i have to spend another 100 on regulators, gauges and fittings. Like i said, i'd like a big one, but i've never ran into an instance where 30 gallons wasn't enough air for me.
