I used to work with a "controls technician" who'd fit in perfect here.

Guy had a giant lista box on wheels, holding any tool you could think of, perfectly clean and untouched. I pulled him into a retrofit project that involved tapping a machine base for a variety of mounts. In one of our planning meetings he made a vague comment about making sure we had a drill. Seemed odd, as that was an obvious tool we had plenty of.

Day of the job he pulled out a brand new IR air drill, chucked a bit in and spooled that baby up to max RPM and started going after it. I had to stop him and explain how to properly drill steel and that going that fast was just making heat. Project went a bit faster after I took over drilling...

That speed might be right for chucking small wire wheel brushes, that otherwise might be used in a die grinder.
The chuck can likely handle the rpms., and a drill chuck doesn’t require different collets for different shank sizes, which can be an issue if you wind up with the wrong shank size, or metric shanks.
Carbide tipped drill bits also sometimes prefer higher speeds, although 18,000 deems a bit high even for carbide or smaller bits above wire drill sizes.
There was a chuck attachment and bit made for mushroom growers that was designed for mounting on an angle grinder, for quickly drilling holes into logs for growing I think shiitake mushrooms, that would have run at the usual 10,000+/- tpm speed of an angle grinder.
The one video I saw of the system in use made it seem to work quickly and well.
The appropriateness of the speed probably depends on if you are using it to drill, and with what, into what,

bumping this older thread up.
I recently picked up 2 Ingersoll rand 317 sanders for parts or repair off of ebay. Not that I need any more, I already have 2 ... but you know the story, when it says not working it's a magnet for me to see whats wrong and can I fix it.
It turns out they both seem to work flawlessly .
anyway, out of curiosity I tore one down to the bones to see " what makes them tick"
I got thinking of this thread and tonight I looked at my box of drill chucks . I needed a 7/16-20 mount, no luck. I did find a 3/8-24 , so off to the lathe & drilled & tapped it to the right size. Pics will follow hopefully tomorrow.
I still need to make a collar nut to fit these sanders to accept a 4" x 5/8 center hole sanding pad, in this thread , that's a work in progress too .
