Hello,

I just took possession of this interesting toolbox, but it’s not presently with me to photograph it’s interior details. It’s in great shape, and I saw an old thread on the Military Jeep Forum where it might be a “Type 10” and post 1950?

It’s definitely chunky , and is not the typical long and narrow box. It has four little affixed notches where a tray might rest ( the box had no tray ) upon, but they don’t appear very sturdy.

If this is not a wartime unit, please let me know and I’ll post up in the vintage area.

Thank You all!

Shawn

This is a photo from that old GMTK discussion thread from the Military Jeep Forum. The measurements are dead on to those provided in this description.

I sent these photos to the BMG Company that is referenced in the email with the green Type 10, and they confirmed it to be an original type 10 ordnance toolbox.

Note that the "Types" on that G503.com thread are not actual, formal, military designations. Cliff (username Hartofoak there) was just trying to distinguish boxes as they were discovered so that we would have an easy way to keep track and refer to them in discussion. A wartime Ordnance Dept document, SNL J-15, did identify several different kinds of boxes by "Type". But there is no correlation.

Hello Lugz!
As always,I appreciate your ever pragmatic perspective and information. The BMG rep told me that my old box is an US Govt. Issue ordnance toolbox (item number 5140-473-6260) based upon the photos/details and measurements. It’s just like the one they formerly had in their NOS inventory some years back, from which that photo reference was used.

Stay safe !

Did you ever see the box that d42jeep directed me to?
Picked this up on Mercer Island a few months ago. Can't recall clearly the story on it now. I seem to recall it belonged to the guy's grandfather. WWII vintage if I'm not mistaken.

Amazingly, I still have the notes with the directions to his house and his phone number. I left a message on his voice mail. Hopefully he'll get back to me so I have the provenance on the box.

Mine had been painted grey over the green on the interior. There was no paint left on the exterior so I had no choice but to paint it.

The seller was kind enough to call me back about that box.
It belonged to his father, one George Dijulio, who was too young to enlist for the armed services at the outbreak of WWII and went to work as an apprentice in the shipyards here. Unfortunately he didn't recall whether it was the Todd shipyards or over in Bremerton, where my grandfather worked during WWI.

Amazingly, the paint on this beast is in great shape. There's a big glob of some sort of goo on the front (lower right in the photo above) and some tiny paint splatters on the exterior, but nothing that warrants a repaint job.

The box itself is heavy enough that if loaded with tools, it would be a challlenge to lift up and carry around.
