Is this a real Craftsman?

Did Craftsman ever make a wooden toolbox like this? I’m thinking someone slapped an old badge on this box.

I've only come across a few wooden Craftsman machinist boxes and they were much older than the one you have posted. I have not seen one with a modern emblem before. This isn't to say that the box isn't real. Rather, it might be less common given that the majority of Craftsman machinist boxes are made of metal.

I can't speak for your box, but Sears occasionally sold wood machinist boxes in the 90s, which leads me to believe that a box with a badge from the 70s/80s might be legit. Sears would offer up all kinds of special items over the years - especially around Christmas time - that may or may not have been repeated in ensuing years. Wood machinist boxes were among those items.

I realize machinists boxes were often wooden. I just hadn’t seen a wooden one branded with a Craftsman badge like that.

I did some quick google searches and didn’t see another one with that badge.

I may have to go look at it in person and investigate some more.

I don’t know if they did or not, but that’s a really nice looking box, especially if it truly is from the vintage the badge would indicate.

A good tip off is what kind of wood is it? If it's American oak, it's probably legit. If an Asian wood, probably not.

Didn't realize I hadn't updated my info. I'm in the Norfolk area of VA.

So it looks like I missed out on the wooden box. Might be a good thing though. I came across another picture and it doesn't have the Craftsman badge on it. Definitely seems a little weird.

I recall seeing these in the tool specialty catalogs back in the 80's and 90's. if you're going to clone a box, I would think craftsman is the last badge you'd stick on...but seen stranger things. I think it is legit though.

In the 78/79 catalog there are two wooden machinists chests.
The larger of the two has the rectangular badge on it .

Seems odd to me that the corner guards, drawer pulls and finger pull on the front cover are dark finished. Usually they are nickel plated or in some cases polished brass. Also the center panel on the front cover is something other than finished wood. There are now a number if imported wood machinists' boxes being sold by a number of stores for cheap money. Gerstner even sells an offshore-made line for those who do not want to pay for the real thing. My guess is Asian.

That's a Craftsman 20 inch wood chest. Description from my 1980-81 catalog describes it as having lacquered black plated steel hardware, and black, leather look vinyl top, side and front panels. Construction was oak with poplar drawers with steel bottoms. Catalog number was C9 GT 6510C and price was $229.99
