Is this a real Wilton?

Came across this 3.5" "Wilton" for sale and I know very little about vises, let alone Wilton's. I know I have a China made Irwin, and it's time to upgrade.

Person who has it says there's no model number, that they can find.

Anyone have any input?

Any help appreciated!

Been with the wife to several garage sales around here, and even been trying some pawn shops and thrift stores recently too. I rarely even see tools in a whole block sale.

I have good luck with older neighborhoods and even what would be considered lower class neighborhoods when your looking for tools at yard sales.

For $30 what do you have to loose? That would serve well until you find something else. Those Irwins are bad loose IMO.

As others have said, it's made in China and (imo) not a good vise but if you need one, $30 is an ok price.

However, if you're not in a hurry, check out local pawn shops, used tool stores, and Craigslist - you're much more likely to find a well-made vintage US vise that will last your lifetime and beyond.

Prices will vary depending on size and maker, but expect retail prices to be ~$2/lb for a good US made vise. Any US vise priced at $1/lb or less is a great deal.

I check out as many as I can, typically aim for estate or block sales or try to make them on the way of other errands I'm doing. But can't make it to everyone. I also, won't drive too far anymore for a single garage sale, as the money I spend on gas will probably pay for one off of here or eBay before I find a "you ****" deal.

It isn't like I'm looking for a professional vise either, just diy'er type.

This was my thought too, but if it isn't an upgrade, I shouldn't get another. But I don't mind having a selection of vises either. Like most here, having a selection is a good thing.

I might have to offer a lower price, and if he accepts, it was meant to be. I'll donate the Irwin to someone none the wiser.

The pawn shops are something I try to do as often as possible, but haven't seen a single vise at the three near me. I try to only check those places when it's convenient for me. I guess I should be trying the inner city ones, could end up on TV ;). Any CL add in the past couple months has been people who are selling them at market price, so they're all $200+. Been hoping for an add like "selling my husbands/fathers tools" and they don't use google before hand, lol.

What's the average weight of US made 4" vise?

I'm sure the vises are worth these prices, and wouldn't be a bad investment. But not being in a rush, it makes them an impulsive buy, which the wife doesn't like me doing anymore.

For a fixed base model I'd say something like 35-40lbs is average. Add a swivel base and that goes up a little bit, but some can be quite a bit heavier. My Parker 824 which is a swivel base, 4" jaw weighs 85lbs (and I paid either $60 or $80 for it in great condition).

Without knowing where you are it's hard to say what your market might be like, but in many places you should be able to find a decent 4" USA made bench vise for $100 or less and have it last your lifetime. In fact, if you post where you are, there's a good chance one of the vise addicts here might have exactly what you're looking for, or know of one.

Generally speaking, I wouldn't bother with pawn shops....whenever I see them list a vise it's at the far upper end of pricing for whatever it is they're selling.

Thanks.

I'm in SE MI.

Several great memebers have PM'ed me already to help!

I haven't seen one to know at pawn shop, yet. They've had junk ones, but nothing I knew as a US made product.
