HI Guys,
Lurking here, and only a few posts, but want your thoughts. I built a 26x48x12 last fall. 2x6 walls, spray foam walls, steel siding, 4/12 pitch roof, flat ceiling with blown in insulation R49, 1/2" pex, 4) 300' loops. I have 2) 10x10 doors, 1) 7X9 door, and a 36" man door. 3) 3x4 windows. All doors are new, 2" CHI premium insulated.
I put in a Reznor NG unit heater this past fall, as I just couldn't afford to install boiler for my floor heat.
I just found a Weil Mclain Ultra 105 for sale, for less than $2000.00. If this thing is in great shape, would you think that it would be a good boiler to use for my size garage?
I have not done a heat loss calculation, but from what I have told you, would this be sized close enough for me to use? I mainly use it to keep the cars warm during the winter months, and for messing around out there from time to time.
Thanks, Brad

it's a bit on huge size for what you have, based on your description .. but there are piping strategies and straight up cheats, like a boiler buddy for example, that could make this work

weil mclain is pretty awesome stuff .. very high end

i wouldn't pay anywhere close to 2 grand for it though .. i'd have a hard time shelling out 5 hundred for a used boiler, and that is if i knew the history of it .. what does the seller say about why they wanna part with it ???

Stay away from That Ultra boiler , we are taking them out as fast as we can , they do not even make them anymore due too problems and more problems.
Nobody wants to even work on them including the people who installed them to start with.
They were junk the day they made them.

it will cost you one heck of a lot more to keep that thing working .

I can't believe they are even trying to get 2k out of a used boiler. You get no warrenty, so the price should drop dramaticly for that alone. The unknows about a used boiler should make the price drop even more.

I picked my boiler up on CL for $250. I watched it for 3 weeks when it listed at $800. I offered him $250 if I could pressure check it to check it over. There is not a path being beaten to the door of a person selling a used boiler.

Keep hunting.

did i say 500 ?? i meant 5 bucks !! hahaha

mgo .. what's the issue with that machine ?? wm stuff is usually killer

I am not a WM dealer in fact I highly dislike WM products , but I have one client who's unit is only 5 yrs old and he has put 3 thousand in repairs since installation.

Not sure exactly whats wrong with them except , I am taking them out and customers are angry as hell with the installers who won't come back to fix them/

When it comes to the Hi Eff boilers , we install Triangle Tubes units and no problems

As mentioned used boilers don't hold their value. I can run a quick heat load calc for you tomorrow.

Thanks all, for the input. He had issues with the heat exchanger, and had that replaced. He said that he replaced the boiler because he needed heat right away, so he had this one sitting there.....I was pretty leary of buying someone elses problems. He said that it was 4 grand new, and would guarantee this Ultra is fine. Well, I think I will pass, even though he said he would drop the price to 1850.

Meathooker, if you could do that, I would appreciate that. I am maybe leaning towards a Munchkin boiler?

if you buy a munchkin make sure you have a pile of flame sensors, ignitors and system pressure sensors .. they go through them like potato chips

Okay, so Munchkin is out....what do you suggest for a NG boiler, wall mount? I am on somewhat of a budget, but feel that I should be able to get one for 2500 that would do the job?

its kind of a **** shoot buying a used anything mechanical .. just like a car ..
and a lot depends on the original installation and it's upkeep

how much boiler do you need ?? if your budget is 2k there are plenty of brand new options you could be looking at

I had a heating guy come look at my garage, and he priced me out a Munchkin MD80, that is all that I can tell you.
So, what brand is in my budget?

Thanks, Brad
