is this a south bend model 34?

Looked at this today. Looks like everything is there and would be a working unit with minimal effort. The replaceable section of the ways right in front of the headstock are dinged up, but nothing very deep. Anyone care to share their ideas on a ballpark value or thoughts about the model?

I am planning on using it for automotive fabrication (desert racing). Primarily driveshafts, bushings, transmissions, probably crankshaft polishing on occasion.

Since the owner so carelessly places chucks, faceplates, etc. directly on the ways indicates that he has little concern regarding damaging the ways. The actual damage (really unconscionable, in my opinion) further confirms this. At that asking price, it would be a "no".

At that price, I'd say it's going nowhere fast - and it's already been up for 26 days. Although Reno is not exactly the machine tool capitol, I'd be surprised if it went for much over $400. Sellers like to make a big deal out of chucks, etc., but most of that stuff is usually worn out. I think you'd be taking on a project.

I think $1000 is a bit optimistic for that lathe I would hold out for something better or wait until the price drops to a more realistic number ($400-$500).

That looks like a HUGE project. If it weighs less then 20,000 lbs I'd be surprised.

I'd rather have the Reed / Prentice than that POS South Bend. It's still kinda grizzly looking.

Dpending on in person codition it could be a nice machine. The old south bend isn't nearly as rigid or feature packed.

The Reed Prentice reminds me of some of the old iron I ran in my youth (I never worked at Mare Island, though). If it has been run in a production environment, it might be heavily worn out. Approach with caution.

How did you come up with that number?

Actually, if it weighs more than 7-8000lbs I'd be very surprised, I'm thinking more like 6500. Have a similar 16X54 Monarch gear head that goes about 4500, so can't see it being THAT heavy. If it's in good shape, it will probably do whatever you want for the rest of your life, except maybe cutting metric threads, and who knows, it may even do that. Definitely worth checking out, long as you have the space for it.
