It's always a question of "Does this rule go with this set?"

This has been used in my shop for as long as I've been using my shop. I very rarely use anything but the square head.

Every part is steel or cast-iron, and nicely machined.

Nothing in this set has any markings but the rule:

Sorry about the shaky picture. I shouldn't even attempt macro photos without a tripod.

But is it actually square? Let's give it the "flip test":

Well within the accuracy of my freshly-sharpened pencil.

I can't find any pictures of a Stanley # 1222 1/2A with the light-blue "hammered" finish like this one, nor any that seem as well-made.

I do need to clean it up some.

That light blue hammered finish is familiar, but right now I can't recall where I have seen it, or what company made it.

I don't recall Stanley ever being blue.

PEC, Empire are two that pop to mind, as well as several off brands from the bargain checkout bin.

Looking at the shape of the curves, and the nuts, may help more than color.

The rule fits in those heads like it was made for them. It's the heaviest rule--at about 0.085"--of the half-dozen or so I have around the shop.

I think the nuts in this set might be on upside down. I'll bet the flat end goes towards the spring. They usually have a recess cut into one side for the spring to fit into.

Here's a very similar one with a General brand ruler in it. It's for sale on Etsy.

I think the nut goes on like the one below.

This one is on eBay, but no ruler to suggest a brand name. (upside down nut, like half of the ones I've bought).

I can't quite make out the name on this ruler.

I'm going to guess PEC (as mentioned by RTM above).

I'd never think to connect "combination square" with "machinist". Mine get used 99% of the time as marking gauges. I'd never even tried the flip-test until today. Pretty well impressed by how it came out. Maybe I'll give it another shot tomorrow with a scribe instead of the pencil.

BTW--if you hadn't noticed, that set still has the scribe--but I use a carbide scribe when I need one.

Nice match! Them ain't the cheap ones, are they?

Now I need to go through my rules and see if I have one to match.

Nope. Every single rule I have is marked "Stanley" of various vintages. Unfortunately, that PEC website doesn't seem to show the markings on the rule (if any) well enough to know what I'm hunting for "out in the wild".

Now, this one,

53562825420_08623ea637_b.jpg

I can say, with a fair degree of confidence, is a Stanely--likely Made in England.

Aluminum body, feels like junk compared to the CI body (I gave them the file test) blue ones above.

I’ve got it as a Moore & Wright out of Sheffield, England.
