A kid got himself into trouble trying to get a socket head plug out of his Mitsubishi engine.. stripped it completely out then decided he would drill and tap it himself.. kids... long stpty short, as i was digging out my bolt extractors this was in my drawer... as its kind of thin ive always just assumed it was a funky shaped punch but could it be a broken bolt extractor??

The first picture reminds me of what is called a "cape chisel".

Looks very much like a cape chisel. Still a relativley popular chisel style.

yep. cape chisel. used for collapsing (caping), a broken ****** in a fitting.

Looks like a one you would use to cut a key way in a shaft. But looks to have been reground.

Cape chisel, great for removing rotten pipe ******* like Metaldad said. They are also great for cleaning out keyways or even cutting them deeper.

Yeah, I looked at that tip under a magnifying glass...if it was ground its been wotn smooth.. think im going to put a chisel point back on it tjo

A pic of my Cornwell bolt extractors. Very-satisfied w/these.

I think I have a cape chisel I got in a box of old tools, I'll look for it & post a pic if I can find it. Looks v. similar to pic #1 as I recall. The plastic toolbox it was in w/a lot of decent sockets and wrenches had about 2" of water in it when I got it. I dumped-out the water and poured-in enough cleaning vinegar (6%) to cover the lot, and checked on them every day. Nearly all of them came out very good, for their 'who-knows how-long' water bath was?

I took a look on youtube for some pertinent content and found this old mechanic removing a galvanized fitting from an iron casting using a cape chisel. Watch the beginning to-see the set-up then jump-ahead to about 9:30 and watch the next 3 minutes.
