Seller doesn't know, and I've had no luck so far in getting him to check. One of the most unusual CL transactions I've been a part of.

I ask because this is 35 miles from me and I don't want to waste a trip. If not a Baldor, safe to assume it's USA made?

I NEVER understood why people make CL ads using the WORST MOST OUT OF FOCUS picture they can take.... Kinda looks like one to me. Just my opinion. Good luck!

It definitely looks like one to me, but did you ask the seller about the HP and amps? Might get him to get off his *** and look at it for you. I'd also say that you don't want to make the trek unless he/she can verify the make and model. I don't think that's asking too much:dunno:.

It is missing the shields which can be a bargaining chip. Here's a couple of pics of mine. What is the seller asking for it? Keep us posted.

Thanks for replying, both you and J Hav. The seller has been tough to reach. He works on-call shifts and called me from work, as he was finishing an assignment. He really didn't know anything about it when I talked to him, even though I'd asked in prior emails what brand, speed, etc.

The reasons I'm going through this with him are A) could be a nice grinder, and B) it's only listed at $40.

I'd pay $40 for that stand....I would consider the grinder free.

it looks like a 10 inch and maybe a single phase with that plug instead of the 3 phase ones that usually come on grinders that big. the stand is worth the $40 so a few gallons of gas for a grinder would have me at the seller's door if he told me that it runs ok when it's plugged in.

could be a Baldor, but pretty sure it's US made and from the era where grinders were made like our battleships.

Here we go. Picked it up today. Cosmetically it's seen better days, and the wiring could use some love, but it runs fine.

I cannot tell what brand this is, the guy was right as far as that goes, the badge is too worn down. I do see a slight 'USA' at the very bottom.

One thing-- the UL sticker at top and grinder specs sticker at the bottom are in the same places as on my 7" Baldor.

The wheel guards are aluminum, with some specs stamped on them about UL listings and tensile strength. Not sure if that's a Baldor feature or not. Thanks again for all your help.

Is it blue on the inside or under the id.plates? All Baldor grinders were and are blue from the factory,to the best of my knowledge.

Didn't know that. In this case the blue is on top of the red paint. Just checked under the badge; red there too.

I thought there might be enough of that logo for someone to recognize it. Nice job Puget.:thumbup::thumbup:

it has all the looks of a Baldor with the shields, switch and motor shape so maybe IR had Baldor make these for them.

Larry: i'm glad you were able to make this happen and those old 1/3 HP's are probably plenty for any homeowner or fairly light duty shop.

It is an Ingersoll Rand grinder. Balder grinders have always been gray not blue. It might have a blue tint but it is gray. I have a bunch of them.
It is a good grinder and well worth $40. Good score. I would clean it up and repaint it. It is **** ugly but a nice grinder.

I have sold a dozen of them through the years. Cleaned up you can double your money.

Not exactly.

Baldor calls it "Industrial Gray." Granted, it's really kind of a blue-gray. But it's not the only color they've ever used.

The "Big Red" refers to the University of Arkansas Razorback mascot (Baldor's headquarters are in Ft. Smith, AR). Here's a couple of vintage Baldor "Big Red" ads from the 1970s, with the latter being the same as, or similar to, Larry's Ingersoll-Rand branded version:

And in the 1960s, they also offered grinders in Vista Green:

Ask about the tool supports, tool rests, spark arresters and eye guards wheels etc. If it is a Baldor, bringing that grinder up to standards with Balbor parts could make it a $$ sink hole

Baldor made grinders for quite a few brand names. The three most well-known are Ingersoll-Rand, Powermatic and Rockwell/Delta.

Baldor made all Powermatic-branded grinders from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Baldor also made 10" grinders for Rockwell/Delta from the 1960s to the 1980s (other sizes and models of Rockwell/Delta branded grinders were made by Marathon, Doerr and Wissota).

Ingersoll-Rand branded Baldor grinders were made in roughly the same 1960s-80s time-frame.
