Hey everyone, looking for a few other opinions on a used toolbox. Its on the snap on truck, a KRL1022CPJH. Its only a year old just traded in. It has one small dent and a noticeable scratch. (Doesnt bother me that much) The snap on guy offered to sell it to me for $4400 dollars, roughly half of original retail price. Does this seem like a decent price? Im a little newer at shopping for boxes, but a larger one is much overdue

Oh young grasshopper . . . . . Welcome to GJ . . . have to tell you that.

Then, you obviously have not LOOKED around or READ anything on this forum.

For $4,400 you could get around 12 toolboxes just like that SnapOn KRL1022 in the form of:
. . . . . . . . . US General 44" roller toolbox on sale for $349 to $389

It's at Harbor Freight and best bargain for tough toolbox out there.

If the SnapOn guy offers you oceanfront property in Sahara desert, say No ! ;)

The KRL1022 is an excellent box but for that price I'd want one in mint condition vs. a scratch and dent.

Tell your dealer to sharpen his pencil. For a scratch and dent I'd be more motivated at around $3000. Try looking on CL. There can be killer deals out there from time to time.

The advantage of dealing with the dealer, is he probably can finance it for you-but it WON'T be at a very good rate.

If you have cash in hand, I'd shop around. There are deals to be found on boxes on Craigslist if you're willing to wait and you can be the 1st in line. Cash always talks-just be prepared to go IMMEDIATELY when you find what looks to be the right deal.

FWIW.

Yes, shop around...and decide for yourself.....Many here at GJ will tell you many other great deals, and that is fine, but YOU have to decide what suits you and your situation.
Can you get a used 1022 cheaper? Sure. Can you get a different brand with as much tool storage space in one box, or even 2 boxes for less money spent? Very possibly. But are equivalent sized boxes selling for less on the SO mans truck ready to drop in your shop? Is the cheaper price worth whatever work is involved in finding / transporting that other box? You weigh the options and decide.
Personally, I don't think is a bad deal for being really convenient. Not great, but not bad, either.

And for the financing - definately check on the details if you think you want to charge it - I have always gotten better rates through SO credit than I would have putting it on any of my credit cards and the same rates as any bank loans - BUT that was always a new box promotional finance deal - might not be possible to get a good rate on used.

A KRL series is a great box, you can't go wrong with one. Heavy duty and deep.

Try to talk him down some more on the basis of cosmetic damage. While half price sure beats the hell out of full price, the slight damage gives you a good leverage point, particularly if the dealer wants it out of his inventory ASAP. Remember negotiation is allowed, just don't be an *** when you do it.

The advantage of dealing with the dealer, is he probably can finance it for you-but it WON'T be at a very good rate.

All depends on whether you get zero percent interest truck credit or if he kicks it up to SO Corporate for financing. I don't know how SO dealers do box credit, especially used box credit, and what kind of rates would be involved on the corporate credit.

You can also check on getting a loan from your bank.

On sale for $369.99 right now:
http://www.harborfreight.com/tool-s...ossy-red-industrial-roller-cabinet-68784.html

Even if you're a "professional", financing a $4000 tool box is ridiculously ill-advised, but I'm sure all the tool whores here will tell you it's a sound financial decision.

just like that SnapOn KRL1022 in the form of:
. . . . . . . . . US General 44" roller toolbox on sale for $349 to $389
The KRL1022 and HF 44 look slimilar. That's basically where it ends. The 1022 has deeper drawers, and by a pretty wide margin.
From the SO website
Square inches (cm²) 9,563 (61,697)

Let's look at the actual real estate you are buying from harbor freight.

Using the owners PDF for my source the Sq/inches for a 56 inch roller are 4580.0625

Using measurements from their website as my source the sq/inches for the 44 inch roller 3894.875

Using measurements from an employee on the phone as my source the sq/inches for the 7 drawer end box are 1334.34375

tot. 44 & 7drw end = 5229.21875

a 44 & two 7's = 6563.5625
...
For the money it looks like the 44 incher makes great sense right out of the gate.
I own 3 44" bottoms and one 7 drawer side box, and for my budget and needs they were a fine value. But for a tech in a shop that doesn't have room for 150" of toolbox the KRL1022 is a better box. Whether it's a better value is up to him.

Seems like at ridiculous price to me for a metal box. Much less expensive options are out there, but the question is.....is it worth it to you?

I'd pay that in a heartbeat.....for a used Corolla wagon with AC.

And this contribution is helpful to this thread how????

To the OP: There are alot of factors involved, financing vs cash, how long you want to look for a box?hunt vs kill? Some of us enjoy the hunting others enjoy the "kill". If you have the time to search CL and other local ads you can find great deals on all truck brands, HF boxes,Kennedy Boxes, craftsman boxes.
My best advice glean out what you find helpful here on GJ and decided which route is best for you. As many others have said the tools make the money not the box ,but having organized and efficient workspace/storage helps alot too.

It's a perfectly valid comparison, and may open a few eyes as to what you can buy for the crazy price of a USED tool box.

For the less than the list price of that box I bought a really decent 4x4 used truck this summer.

$4000 for a used tool box you can buy a very comparable box for way less than $1000 is ridiculous.

Unless you are in love with that box I'd definitely pass. A envelope of cash, some patience and a truck could could you get much more for your money via craigslist, ebay or word of mouth. May offer a all at once cash price to the driver.

The OP wasn't/isn't asking for a comparison. He's asking if the SO box listed is worth the asking price. He's already stated he doesn't want HF, so why keep pushing it. Not everyone is interested in buying because "it's a great box for the price"

Well Charlie . . . . without even looking I found you perfect tool box.

Comparable "truck tool box" by Matco . . . same size as SnapOn you were ready to spend $4400 on . . . . here is Matco for $1800 that is blue

http://tulsa.craigslist.org/tls/4824428951.html

Has nice layout with top 2 drawers full width.

I'll drive 3 hrs to Tulsa & pickup, then deliver it to your doorstep within lower 48 USA states for $3000 and you'll have $1400 extra for tools!! ;)

This is not my Matco nor am I associated in any way. Just showing you used "truck" toolboxes out there that are ready to buy, before you ever consider financing for 5 years a $4400 Snappy of similar size. Get loan at credit union and buy yourself a used toolbox if you "have to have" a truck brand.

This is all your opinion. The bottom line is, he's not interested in a HF box. Case closed.

Why do you HF zombies have to go thread to thread like Jehovah's witnesses?

With apologies to Jehovah's witnesses.

Most tool truck brand toolboxes are built for everyday use by a person pulling the drawers in and out 8 to 12 hours a day. HF boxes no comparison. If you like the box and it satisfies your need and want, then it is a good deal for you. In my opinion.
