Before I start welding can someone please tell me if this Wilton C1 Bullet vise spindle is stainless or not? Best guess on a manufacture date is 2007.
Thanks

Oh dear god, please don't quote Quora. You should be able to feel the different attraction that magnetic stainless has to a magnet. Then do a grinder spark test. Between the two, you should be sure.

Austenitic stainless steels (300 series) are not magnetic. Martensitic stainless steels, which can be hardened through heat treatment, are magnetic. If you find that a magnet is not attracted to the screw, then it is likely to be a 300 series stainless steel. If a magnet is strongly attracted to it, then it is not a 300 series austenitic stainless steel.

To be fair, all the stainless steel machinery in Hormel is non magnetic. But the 304 Stainless Steel bolts and other hardware are magnetic due to food production quality assurance for the metal detectors.
It's a little hard to tell when something is magnetic or not at the plant until it's a bit too late haha!

The magnet seems to have the same attraction as a random piece of plate steel. Is that conclusive that it’s not stainless?

I’ll have to research spark patterns to try that.

Thanks guys for your valid input.

Probably. Work hardened 304 will have a weak attraction, as will most 400 series. By the shape of that piece, if it were stainless, I'd have guessed it was a free machining type like 303, which again is usually non-magnetic unless work hardened. If it has the strong attraction of plate steel, it probably isn't stainless.

The spark test will make it conclusive:
If you're not immediately adept at identifying the sparks, just grind a known set of metals too for comparison.

The XC Tradesman models have electroless nickel plating. Maybe that's what is also used on the Combo models now.
