Here's the scoop. I'm a home shade tree type and typically only do maintenance and minor repair type work (Home and Automotive). I have a decent amount of tools, well at least enough to have outgrown my old Craftsman tool chest so about a year looking I started looking for a replacement.

During that time, the 2 boxes that interested me the most was the HF 44" roll cab and the SO KRSC46 cart. I liked the price of the HF box but loved the size and setup of the SO box. I was really debating between those 2 when one day I came across a great deal on Craigslist for a SO KRA4114\4107 combo which I ended up buying.

That combo is fine but really it's kind of overkill (size wise) for my needs. I don't (nor will I ever) have enough tools to fill that thing up. It has 11 drawers plus the top of which I have the top and 4 drawers fairly well filled, 3 that are half empty and 3 more that are completely empty.

I guess that's not a bad thing but I may have an opportunity to trade my current box for a brand new KRSC46 and the best part being, if that happens, I will be able to keep 2 of the 2" drawers from my current setup and swap them with one of the 4" drawers of the 46 which I think would make the 46 perfect for me.

The down side too this trade is value wise I'm kind of on the loosing end and I'm obviously giving up a lot of extra storage space? So should I just be happy with what I have or downsize to something more appropriate for my needs?

If it helps, the trade would be with my nephew. He's just starting out as an automotive tech. He can get the KRSC46 at the student price and if we trade, he's basically getting the larger KRA4114\4107 set for the KRSC46 price so it may be a win\win for both of us?

If you want to help your nephew out go for it. If you think you might regret it later make it clear to him it is a temporary loan until he can afford a bigger box, and that you might want it back one day. Really this is all up to ones relationship with their nephew, their current life standings....

Side note if you do make an agreement with him be ready for him to never give it back.

I wouldn't say its crazy. But the tool box you have is worth more money than that kart is. If you want to help your nephew out then do it. but im sure he probably doesn't have enough tools to fill your box up either. Your box, your descision but honestly I would keep your box. whos to say you won't want to buy some more tools in the future or you descide to take on a bigger repair and need to buy extra tools. In my opinion you can't have too much space.

Keep the box you have, You will fill it up, Trust me, you will, my last box I told the wife this is the last box I will ever get, Well I have filled it to its cap. and I am looking again. like you I just do my own stuff, but there is too many good deals on this site. If empty drawers bother you right now fill up one with bolts and nets and junk. You can clean it out later when you do need the space. Fill another one with sand paper. I am sure if you tried you could find stuff to fill them. How about your repair manuals. Just never down size. Tool boxs and garages never down size.

Thanks for the input so far.

At my age, I pretty much know my needs, wants and limitations. Because of that I can say pretty confidently that I will never fill my current box up. The only way that could happen is if I start using it for my non-automotive tools (WW'ing tools, Construction\home improvement stuff, etc.). if I did that I could easily fill it up but I store those tools separately and prefer not to mix them up.

As far as helping my nephew... he doesn't have enough tools yet to fill either box. The only thing this deal does for him is allow him to get a bigger box for the same money. That just buys him more time before he'll ever need to upgrade to something bigger.

Then again, this is just something floating around in my head. I haven't even said anything to him about it yet. He might not even be interested? :dunno:

A bigger box may mean a better job for the nephew. There may be benefits for you down the road too. No matter what you do though the tool truck of his choice will probably get a fair percentage the first years. The trade seems like a win win to me.

Just make sure his box is paid off if you make the trade....

Personally i wouldn't trade, but that is me. you say you will never fill it. I thought that several times over over the years, but I've given up with that thought...
