I am looking to purchase a miter saw (on the cheap) and saw this CL post:

"I am selling my trusty old miter saw. I am not able to use it anymore due to my health. This is a Delta saw model 34-080. It has a excellent and sharp cross-cut blade on it. This saw is very very accurate. It is also made of cast-iron and this helps in a very fine cutting. A cast-iron body means a lot less vibration for fine work. The saw is missing the dust bag and plastic vac adapter tube, but parts for this saw are still available.

I am listing this saw for $60 or best offer.

Interested? Then email me.

Thanks.

Sorry about these threads.. but I am a total noob and would like to get a feel for something before I spend $$$ on it.
And I know there are a lot of very knowledgeable folks on this site!

Hey, it looks like an 80 tooth blade, lots of carbide, sure to be worth 10.00 to 20.00 used, the saw if operable good for 30.00 to 40.00 or more. Should not be a problem getting a best offer of at least 50.00. I would go for it if I was in need. Of course, most people are going to say they know of another one for forty bucks. You may have to stand your ground for the 60.00 and pass on a few offers. The right guy will come around. I have seen adds at craigslist and e-bay that were up a long time. Eventually the item sold. It all depends on who is wanting and how long you can wait. Seems reasonable to me. A nice Freud blade can cost anywhere between 40.00 and 80.00 bucks. Good luck.

Sorry I am looking to purchase the saw.

I just quoted the CL ad.

I have clarified the original post so there is no confusion.

No blade guard? It may be worth $60, but it's not something I'd go for. If you're on the fence, offer $50, see if he budges.

It is a 25 year old miter saw. Is it a 10 or a 12 inch model, it looks bigger than a 10, but the pics are rough. 60 bucks is the max that one is worth, with the blade. If it is cast iron rather than aluminum, it is not that portable. Figure the cost of sharpening that blade when you get it, about $40.

Those Cmans can be had new for around $100. I bought a 10" sliding Cman a few years ago brand new around Xmas for $100. It does what I need it to do, but I don't use it much.

I don't know what your plans are for the saw, but keep in mind the 10" stationary blades you are looking at won't cross cut much more than a 2x6 in on cut. I would be on the look out for a slider.

I purchased my first slider new from Menards (midwest version of Lowe's or HD) which was a generic Protec model for $120. This sliding Wren a Sears.com is probably a direct copy with Wren's name on it:

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00931638000P?prdNo=10&blockNo=10&blockType=G10

I eventually upgraded to a 12" Hitachi (not very portable) which had much better acuracy due to the blade adjustment, but not cheap @ over $500.

I see you are looking into the Craftsman models which are probably made by Ryobi, you may want to check the reviews, last I remember Wood gave the CM line poor reviews

Edit, Poster above beat me to some points

Edit 2, I would stay away from that second saw. Lister says he used it to cut metal and has an abrasive blade in it. These saws weren't made for that and have heard of the slag/sparks melting the internals.
