I saw this at a Habitat for Humanity restore and thought it was interesting. Not sure if it’s someone’s imaginative Frankenstein or not. Have you seen this before?
Thanks,
Griff

That's a power hacksaw. I'm not sure if it's completely diy but it might've come from a kit. Either that or it's a very well made home job.

Right, I used the wrong word, not bandsaw, hacksaw.
Thanks,

Having no vintage tool experience, I'm thinking home made just based from a few Google searches.

Most don't have the vertical guide bar on the end. Below is a link:

...to a homemade one with a vertical guide bar that uses an automotive differential for gear reduction. The one in question appears to be using an old hand cranked grinding wheel driver in reverse power as a speed reducer.

How much were they asking for it?

That is home made for sure
Look at the drive arm, bolted to a gear. That's home made

With that said, how much do they want for it. Noting wrong with home made for the right price and assuming it works

Thanks guys, the knowledge on the board is amazing. I believe they wanted $100 for it.
Thanks,

Definitely not home made. We have something very similar to it in the maintaince shop for the older part of the plant where I work.

My Grandpa had one similar in his garage when I was a kid. Story was my uncle had made it in shop class. Was one of the projects they could choose to make. Thing worked great and was pretty handy to make quick cuts. Could also set it up and turn it on and walk away since it did take a while to cut thicker metals.

I used to have one very similar to this, got it from a friend's dad who said he built it from plans he got out of Popular Science? Mechanics? in the 60's. He used an old washing machine motor. It worked pretty well, especially if you clamped a weight on the outboard end.
Got rid of it when I moved cross country.

Photo coming soon? :bounce:

I’ll have to try to sneak up there tomorrow and get a couple pics. That half of the plant dates back to at least the mid 1940’s, we’ve actually found notebooks from the workers from back then. We have an old Chicago Pnumatic compressor under the plant that I’d like to drag out. We have several old machines in another basement section. An old belt driven lathe, an old cabinet saw, a drill press. All of it I’d guesstimate dates back to the same time period.
