I friend and me went out to lunch and ate at a restaurant and I looked up at the lights and almost all of them had electrical wires joined by wire nuts laying right below the lights.

Check out the picture.
There were lights like this on and off.

Looks like the wires to the ballast fell down... seems ok to me.

Lots of times there is a sheet metal cover in the light, its part of the reflector, its held in by some cheesy tabs and covers up the wiring and the ballast and I'll bet its gone

OK. I was just purely curious. I have never seen that before anywhere. And the place the lady suggested we go eat was a cheap looking Chinese restaurant, LOL.

You can see the ballast inside the fixture. That tells me the cover that covers the ballast and wires, and forms a raceway, is missing. Technically a code violation, as the fixture only has UL approval when completely and properly assembled.

what was the COO of the light hehehe

Over 70% of ALL light fixtures manufactured in the ENTIRE WORLD are made in the Shanghai Industrial Zone.

So I can install a fixture in way that violates its UL listing and still comply with code?

I was unaware the fixture was required to have a ul listing.

I install industrial air handlers and dehumidifiers all over the country and the majority aren't ul listed:confused:

I know Canada requires the Canadian version to have a C-UL listing, but not the US.

(although I am not as confident as i was a minute ago ).

FLAME AWAY!

it would be technically a violation of the fire code if the lights were not installed as per manufacturers specs at least here in NJ. I would write this a violation and have them put the proper covers in place. Or if they were installed with all proper covers when they received their CO and let them basically fall into disrepair then it would be a violation. Really up to the inspector but me personally I would write it just because they were to lazy to properly install the cover, if the cover is there it wont cost them a dime to fix.

90-7 says that if a piece of equipment has been listed by a testing facility, it shall conform to code.
110-2 says the conductors and equipment required or permitted by this code shall be acceptable only if approved. the FPN refers to 90-7 and 110-3.
110-3 (b) installation and use. listed or labeled equipment shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling.

i know of nothing stating any equipment or luminare has to be listed by a testing facility, however if you chose to install a piece of equipment that is not listed, you are at the mercy of the AHJ who will often reject it.

Yeah that looks pretty bad. It also kind of looks like Romex feeding the fixture as well, which rarely allowed use in commercial buildings.

Exactly. You don't have to have produce a UL certified product, nor do you have to install one (unless there is a local requirement for it).

local requirement or spec for the job. that could also pose a problem if the spec states all devices, equipment, etc. to have ul listing or equivalent. especially when you have full time inspectors on the jobsite. i suppose if its in the spec and you dont follow it, you could have a nasty punch list also
