Is this overkill for my Pole Barn?

No kill like overkill right? Well the price keeps climbing and I'm not sure if I am just asking for too much.

Barn is going up now and is 32x40x14. Will be insulated by me, R19 in the walls, not sure about the ceiling yet. I will be keeping 2 dogs in there during the day, inside/outside dog run. And in Michigan the winter gets COLD and typically below 0 for a few weeks and for a month in the summer A/C will be needed.

My Options

1. Ceiling mount gas shop heater(60k BTU), wall mount A/C. This is probably the cheapest option and would be installed by me. Not sure on any insurance issues with this option.

2. Professionally installed Ceiling mount heater(Hot Dawg 60k) with gas run to house for $3200. Still need to install my own A/C unit.

3. Full 80K BTU Goodman Furnace with 2.5 ton A/C unit Installed with the gas run to the house for $4400.

For my size I am not sure if I really need the furnace/A/C option #3 but I want to be able to control the temps for the dogs as sometimes we need to be away from the house longer than normal.

Thoughts? I am not going to do In floor heating. I think I have ruled out mini splits as I don't think they will heat enough when the tempos dip down to the teens.

Thanks!

I work on cars but not daily. I have a side business and will be using part of the work area for that maybe 5-6 hours a week. I don't weld yet and I do no woodworking.

Interesting option. Obviously with our dogs being in the garage I want something that is safe because they could be in there for 8-10 hours at a time. I was hoping for a WiFi thermostat option and I am not sure if this type of unit can do that.

A radiant heater is just as safe as forced air, they vent outside. In my opinion they make it more comfortable at lower temperatures. Most are capable of running off a standard low voltage thermostat, meaning you could use anything that will work with a forced air furnace.

gas fired heater like a big maxx with the wi-fi stat-emerson sensi works well ,if needed on the ac side install a ductless or a window unit...500 for the heater,100 for the stat ,you could go with lp if the gas run to house is to crazy, always best to install yourself if you can-saving the benjamins for beer. i find my pole barn stays 10-12 degrees cooler/warmer than outdoor temps...r-38 ceiling with rigid foam in walls r-10..

What’s the longevity of the Radiant or Celing mount garage heaters running off and on every day for 8 months out of the year? That’s the other reason a furnace sound appealing to me. Very long warranties...

If you ever spent time on a heated floor in a northern winter, you would never consider anything else.

It's amazing comfort.

IMO.

I've been just as happy with a radiant tube. Plus you can bump up the temp with a tube heater unlike in floor heat. Forced air has always felt cold or drafty unless the temp is set considerably higher.

The building next to me has three tube heaters. Two have been replaced within the last couple years but still one original. It was put up in the late 80's.

I would consider something easy and basic for the dogs. I'd frame in an area for the kennel or kennels. If you put a dog door in for them, they can go in or out as they please. You could put in a window AC unit for the summer and nothing more than an electric oil filled radiator for the Winter.

Building a kennel area will help keep the dog smell out of the rest of the garage and you can insulate the walls accordingly. Adding an insulated ceilings to the area will give you a 5-6' storage area above.

Once this is done, you can figure out a heating/cooling system for you and the rest of the shop.

I think I have decided on a full HVAC system. Do it once and be done with it and if I do end up walling off the kennel, I can just use some flexible ducting to get heat and AC over to that small room. HVAC guy suggests 60K BTU Furnace with a 2.5t AC unit. Does that sound right?

60k may be a bit small for the cubic feet of your building. I have a 50k in my 24x24 in NY. I wouldnt want it to be much smaller.

Sounds like a good overall move, not sure a Heat Pump will do much good that far north, but I'm going with a Heat Pump HVAC in my new shop.

I have a 30x50 pole building with 15' ceiling. We have R-19 in the walls and blew in 12"+ in the ceiling. We just finished it and already getting the benefit of the insulation. I'm located in SE Wisconsin and currently experiencing a heat wave with temps in the upper 80 to mid 90s. The building is staying 10+ degrees cooler than the outside as long as we don't open the overhead doors. I open the widows during the night when the temps go down and close them first thing in the morning. I recent sold a stick building with the same insulation set up and did the same with that one.

As with my previous building I install a ceiling mounted IR gas fired tube heater. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but in my other building, 50x50 with 15' ceiling the builder installed two tube heaters and even in the coldest of time of the year I only used one heater. As stated the floor was always nice to lay on to do repairs to my vehicles. My new unit is a two stage unit, the other building's heaters were single stage. The dual stage is supposed to be more efficient. It will fire up to th 100,000 BTU to start with but once reaching temp will reduce down to 65,000 to maintain temperature.

Awesome! Thanks for the input. SE Wisconsin is right at my level so we're experiencing the same exact weather issues and will this winter for sure.
