I came across this old planer at my local Habitat Re-store. I think they wanted $25 . I believe it is a 12 in model but haven't found a model number of details on it.

If i was going to see if it could fire up before i would buy it to make sure the motor was ok.

Assuming it checked out and was still available (was there yesterday) does anyone think it is worth buying?

I mean i could use a planer, but is it worth the trouble. could i get knives for instance? are they interchangeable?

Total Shop was a nearly exact copy of Shopsmith. They were eventually caught copying a part that still had an active patent and were put out of business by the ensuing lawsuit. Parts will be impossible to find, but for $25 the motor may be worth that much.

Planer knives are fairly interchangeable - with some noteable exceptions! They can also be sharpened by a sharpening service at little cost. For $25!! if it works I'd grab it if I didn't already have two. Very useful tool even if this one isn't high precision.
With all the ShopSmith copy comments, be sure to check to see if it even has a motor!

Benchtop planer knives are routinely not interchangeable, unless that planer used one of the older more standardized or simpler designs.
