i've been spending quite a bit of time the last few weeks hunting ebay for old body hammers to expand my collection. found some great bargains and picked up a few things, then i come across these :eyecrazy: . i understand there are collectors of everything, and i have an extra soft spot for old tools, never start these types of threads, but i cant even begin to fathom this

Vintage my ***. Any tool with a "warning, wear safety googles" sticker isn't vintage....
Besides, what's the difference between a new hammer and one that's 20 years old?? Nothing.

Fairmont body hammers were bought out by martin and the new martin ones are pretty close in quality. I'd just buy a set of new martin's if I was interested in those two on ebay.

Now the old proto body hammers with the hex shaped handle are really awesome. I've seen NOS ones of those go for around $50 but never much higher.

The best way to get good old body hammers on the cheap is to look on ebay for just the heads and buy a handfull of the $1 replacement handles at the flea market. Alot of times people don't know that they are body hammers so the ebay add will be rather generic.

Sometimes old body tools go for prices online that make my jaw drop. In my opinion what makes them special is the fact that they don't come to market as often, and many times those types of tools wind up in the hands of people who don't know what they are in the first place, and can't properly sell them so they seem more rare.

Other than that, when they do come up for sale they are normally well used and/or hard to make out the manufacturer's name, so ones in nice shape would likely go for more.

I may be willing to pay more for the "vintage" name, but a similar hammer from martin today would be in the $60 range

$234 for a 8 inch Crescent brand pipe wrench????? :dunno:

This guy's tough.

I've run across this kind of seller's expectation when I've looked for used books.

If it were an old Proto or a discontinued vintage Snap-on, I could see them going for $100+, but these are simply overpriced. Those are later Fairmount hammers which are practically identical to the new Martin hammers, both of which are sub-$30 brand new. I would guess the market value of these to be $40-50 max, if you could find a buyer willing to pay a premium for the name. But hey, somebody might pay and surprise us all!

The most expensive vintage body hammers, to my knowledge, are the Snap-on BF634 shrinking hammer and Snap-on BF633 vertical chisel hammer, which can go for $120-$160 on eBay in good condition. Those are some of the most rare collector hammers around. Some of the old Protos were going for big money a few years ago, but that seems to have calmed down a bit. One or two guys gunning for a complete collection can make a measurable difference in these weird little niche markets.

Funny how luckytools is pointing out how rare a lot of his tools are, rare to me is only finding a handful, his "rare" tools were made by the boatload back in the day. I wonder how many suckers , buy that as gospel ?

Asking is one thing and getting it is another...

If it's out there, someone collects it. Someone looked at my tools and said, "Why are you collecting hammers?" I said, "That's not a collection. That's one or two hammers for each of fifty things which need hitting each in its own way."

The problem is why does anyone think ASKING price has anything to do with what the item is worth? The seller can ask a million dollars. It doesn't make the item worth that much until cash changes hands.
