Is this really worth $70,000?

Its entirely possible that he has $70k in the box, tools and shop equipment but I dont see anybody spending that much money on it used or as a whole lot.

A month on eBay would probably net him a good portion that much assuming the rest of the drawers are as full as what he has shown. Obviously he'd have a ton of time invested in just trying to get his money back. $20,000 cash might tempt him but very few people IMO are going to want that and have cash and the means to pick it up.

Unless half the box empty, there is $70,000 worth of stuff bought brand new so $20,000 to $30,000 used. Just another lazy person who won't take the time to part everything out, the only way sell it. I wonder if anybody ever buys these set. If I at $70,000 sitting in the bank I wanted to drop all at once on tools, I'd be on the truck, not cruising CL.

Nice but the pics are weak. If you have all of those tools to photograph, would those drawers be the highlights. I'd like to see the wrenches, sockets, pliers, big stuff etc.

Maybe it's a ruse....he'll report them stolen and call the insurance company and use the ad as valuation. A bit like a criminal setting up his Alibi

well, now you ruined his plan - the jig is up... :willy_nil

That's exactly what I was thinking. Wouldn't you be showing the high dollar drawers? :dunno:

I had no plan on buying it. Lol. But as another member mentioned if I had $70k to spend it would be new off the SO truck.

Just another person to lazy to break it up, itemize what he's got, and sell it separately.

There are just few too people out there that have both the need and means of dropping that much money in tools all at once. Much lesser sets languish on CL for months because people don't understand that, why does this guy think his is any different?

exactly, most mechanics working in a shop don't have that kind of cash at their disposal - they finance tools from the tool trucks.
and tool collections are personal - not everone has need of the same set of tools.

Poorly placed ad.... Reading that short, ""generically put"" list The seventy grand includes shop equipment,,,, and the ad states for medium duty trucks..... Price out a 5 or 10 ton USA built floor jack, and some other larger tools for working on trucks,,, That price could be one heck of a bargain!! or a trumped up farce which only shows the good stuff......??? Without a detailed list and a photo album of pictures,???

I bought a deal just like this two years ago....the guy died, his wife had his tools in storage..most of them were from the late 70's early 80's..he worked on MB, BMW, Bently, and RR's...the guy was the best of the best as far as work...I bought everything for 10K....I kept a few things ( wrench sets ) and sold it all...5 boxes, stools, carts..and tons of tools, all SO and Hazet..for 12K....and it made this guys box look like a starter set..so NO not a deal and I do not care if he has 100K in it...it is worth about 10K from the drawers I see...maybe 15K....figure the SO boxes for that age are worth about 15-20% of new from that year...the tools about 30% of list for the ones that you will use and the ones your not going to use...I would not pay over 20% of list so...figure that out...he wants 70k...so what he paid 100k...not...he might have paid 70k over time and 18%inst...but 70Kx17% to buy=11.9K and that might be high..

Lets assume the box and tools and all were 70k new. Big assumption but then again that screwdriver drawer was well stocked. If the wrench, ratchet, and socket drawers are as good, it's possible. Lets then assume its not all engraved or beat to hell. If I were to buy it to resell on ebay figure ill get 40% taking my time, so that's 28k. eBay and PayPal take 3k in fees, and I'll have 2k in shipping, boxes, labels etc minimum. Now I'm down to 23k. Depending how desperate I am to spend the next 6 months selling and packaging that stuff, I'd give 8-13k for it.

I don't see any user spending 13 for it. Something like this needs to be broken down and sold on eBay or to a reseller.

If I had 10k and lived near him, I'd still go look. Explain your reasoning, wave the cash, and see what happens.

Often I'll talk up how great the box is, then just offer on the tools saying I can't afford the box. Hopefully high value of the box makes the price of just tools more reasonable

I see ads like this a LOT. This one is better than most-- normally they advertise $100k in Snap on tools! And the pics are of an old Snap-On box, maybe a SO screwdriver or two, lots of Craftsman, and some HF thrown in. I still can't believe anyone would buy lots like this. I mean-- who is this aimed at-- the independently wealthy Pro who is using CM tools and wants to upgrade, or the new guy starting out with nothing but $70k burning a hole in his pocket? I don't think either of those guys exist.

i would not pay what the guy is asking, but i bet if you looked on the ads here at gj,you would find many used snap on items priced well above 15-30% of new,so let the flaming begin.

He's probably hoping someone will come steal them so he can collect the insurance money. I'm surprised he didn't list his address on there lol

I agree -- seems like the expensive tools always sell much closer to list prices even used.
Looking at the limited pics and actually considering the written description (over look the quality of the writing), my first thought was about the drawer full of pullers - go price that stuff up new, and try shopping around here for used stuff. By the written info, he may well have 100K worth of stuff, but I do agree with others here that no one will ever buy it as a whole. If I had 70K in cash I would also be shopping for new items to add to my collection, not shopping for a "shop closing sale". A used tool dealer type might risk 15 -20K if they get a good look at everything first, but even that's probably high.

I feel for this guy. He's looking to get back his investment. What he's missing is two-fold; who can come up with enough cash to buy the whole lot?.... and he probably doesn't have the latest technology tools in those drawers.

No, The dude that placed that ad and the owner of the tools have to be two different people......? The owner would have opened the large drawers full of expensive wrenches... This Dude also listed a ""pair of ten ton jacks"" Does he know the difference between a pair of jack stands and a jack?? The floor jacks are listed,, Sounds like the Dude's day job may be selling women's clothing ??:lol:
