Baldor motors last forever I love getting the older tools, all my serious tools in my shop are over 40 years old, besides the CNC.

It appears to say 5.8 amp at 115 volts. That's 3/4 hp. Rated the way the physical laws of the universe operate anyway. Rated the way today's manufacturers do it, it would be a full 1 hp.

Bench grinders are like radial arm saws. Nice to have the 10 mins a year you need it, the rest of the time they are in the way

Man, I use mine constantly.
In fact, I have two: one with a medium and fine wire wheels on it, the other with a stone and a Multi Tool from VanSant.

It was the most used tool in the shop BEFORE I got the MultiTool conversion. Now I wouldn't live without it.

That $12 Baldor definitely earns a "You ****."

My Dad has one tucked in a corner. Only times I ever used it was to sharpen drill bits or wire wheel bolts... in other words hardly ever.

I have 3 bench grinders and I use them often, like when ever I have an axe to grind, some rust to cut through or buffing to do. My 6" has a wire wheel and a fine stone, my 8" has coarse and fine buffer wheels and I just got a 10" which will be also mainly used for buffing. I got tired of stalling the 2 small ones from leaning too hard on them so I'm hoping the 10" has the guts I need. I use them often but then I'm restoring some 40 year old motorcycles which are mainly all aluminum (and rust).

Sure, I'd like proper buffers but they cost $$$$. I don't have too much invested in these old grinders and they do pretty close to the same work but with some limitations in clearance.

That Baldor looks like it has the longer shafts like a buffer or close to it. It's definitely wider than my grinders.

I have something like sixteen grinders in my shop, seven of which are more or less "bench" grinders. The 8" Baldor is used nearly daily, the 6" Wissota and 12" pedestal grinder are used several times a week, and the rest are set up with wire wheels, deburr wheels, or for specific things like drill sharpening or TIG tungsten grinding.

How do you get away with not needing a grinder on a regular basis?

$12 for a 1/2 HP Baldor is a good price.

Dunno, do different work I guess. I work mainly on cars and do some metal fab. No machining though, if I need that done I call my brother. (Does all the programming/tooling, etc on several dozen HAAS machines for Smith and Wesson). For grinding I grab one of my many 4.5" grinders.

-Start with Norton. There's a few other good brands out there (CGW isn't bad) but if you want a good, tested wheel, buy Norton.

no, pedestal is HF, it was only $15 when I bough it. but very solid, cast iron with rubber dampers at the bottom, had it for years.
