Is this samsung TV fixable?

Found this TV on the side of the road. I was hoping it was a burnt out resistor which is a cheap and easy fix I've done before. Fired it up and about half the screen is dead from something that hit it. There is no damage to the screen when it is off. Do you think this is fixable or worthwhile to attempt fixing? I'd love to put it up in the garage for football games.

photobucket pic is a no show
If half the screen is dead, it may be a driver IC or voltage regulator went bad.

Do you have internet? If you did, you would know that photobucket doesn't do pictures anymore, ............................unless you pay them $400 a year. ;)

of course it can be fixed....only time and money and parts.

Not worthwhile or cost effective, though.

just mount that one on the wall and say it is "electronic art".
Get one of those 60" jobs for actually watching in the garage.

My 4 year old 32" 6300 series in my bedroom did the dreaded "dim and then black" the other night. I've read it may just be a bad capacitor. I couldn't be bothered looking any further than taking the back cover off. I kept it figuring I'd talk to my uncle who has component level knowledge of these things. $229.00 later I had a brand new 5250 series from BJ's.

Samsung (or any other manufacturer) doesn't make anything smaller than 39" with comparable specs anymore. They don't even have one with better than a 60 Hz refresh rate. The new one's speakers are lame, too. Gonna swap it with the 2 year old 32" 6300 from the basement bar. It has much better sound and I never use the speakers on that one as it's only on as a monitor when I'm entertaining and the big screen is on and I'm using the surround sound or the DJ PA system.

I accidentally tipped my garage tv over and put the tiniest pinhole mark on the screen and it looked pretty much like this. The LCD screen is junk and not worth fixing.

lol my Samsung have the same issue... It could be a number of things from that T-con board to those rubber pads...on the LCD..... for fun yes, worth it $$$ wise NO. Especially if it is a lower end models (series 8 and series 9 are the higher end models, series 6 is the lower end, and series 7 is the medium). There is a youtube guy that give good advise on fixing these .... it was posted here 2 or 3 years back.

The television set was sitting on the side of the road for a reason, I doubt it was because the owner misplaced the remote control.

I used to repair television sets, not just replacing circuit boards, I am talking about troubleshooting down to the component level and replacing the bad parts. Problem is, with the cost of the new television sets being so low, and with the cost of technical labor being what it is, repairing television sets these days is usually not economically practical. Also, many of the components (microprocessors and other flat pack IC's) require special de-soldering and soldering equipment which makes it difficult, if not impossible, for the DIY people to try and make the repair. To replace the whole circuit board most times is not a viable option due to the high cost and to replace the LCD screen is usually more expensive than what the whole television cost.

The screen is cracked. Put a fork in it, it's done. The only fix for that is to replace the screen. A new screen costs more than a new TV. :( You might be able to find a good used one, but you'll still spend a chunk of change. Your only hope is to possibly remove the circuit boards and sell them on eBay.

We tried to sell - cheap - a nice working 42" LCD TV with remote, using the local sales channels. Ended up giving it away, no takers at $100. So agree - one breaks, it's junk. I would not waste the bandwidth even looking for a fix.

For the TV to work it needs 2 things. Magic Smoke, and Magical liquid crystals, If either of them escape from the tv then it won't work. That one looks like something broke the screen and let the magical liquid crystals out. Lucas electric used to sell magical smoke but nobody could figure out how to reinstall it, so nobody bought it anymore, and they stopped selling it. I'm not aware of anyone selling Magical liquid crystals so i guess you would just have to trash the TV.

Check the model number before you put it back on the curb. If you do ebay, the stand and some of the boards might be worth selling on there.

The TV itself is 100% toast though.

looks like a bad Tcon board. if you can find one on ebay it is super easy to swap out, and maybe fix it for $35.

I've fixed a few, but the last one just died again (power board failure - they are susceptible to power spikes and rarely have fuses any more), and I've got another one sitting that I think I'm going to scrap.

when they were $350 for a 38" it was one thing, but $100 40" TV's and $350 50" TV's (and now Smart to boot), it's not really worth it to fix anymore...

but since the powerboard is working, you could probably sell it on ebay.

Samsung makes the LCD panel for lots of brands, btw, but LG makes good TV's if you are looking.

I'm no expert, but that doesn't look like something simple like a capacitor or resistor. It looks like the screen has had an actual impact with damage.

Tvs are so cheap now, for most people its just not worth the time and you could easily have another issue down the road after this one was fixed.

I've soldered in some new capacitors before and it worked, that's about my experience level. But for most people, I wouldn't recommend it. Buy a new one or find a working one used for next to nothing.

It's unreal, the amount of free TV's on Craigs List. Most are CRT's though. A few flat panels.

My 55" Panny plazma died a year ago. Felt bad, it was a damn nice picture. Didn't have to turn the heat up very much in the room though. It just went black one day, and has the appropriate trouble code (forgot the number) that according to everybody, is just the resistor or capacitor issue. I hung onto it, and later on this winter, I'll **** around with it for the hell of it, and if it works, maybe donate it to whoever.

I'm not a big Samsung phone lover. All 4 of Mrs. LS6's have been pretty lame. The TVs are still one of the best (if not THE best) rated TVs...

Toss it.

An acquaintance of mine in his 50's shot an airsoft gun at his two week old LCD Samsung a few months back. The cost to repair it was more than a new one. Of course the idiot tried to return it to Best Buy as defective first.

They only came clean on the LED TV capacitor issue after class action and other litigation.........no thanks.

"Samsung settlement warrants older TVs with faulty capacitors
Samsung has set up a Web site to deal with the proposed settlement of a class action lawsuit applying to certain older TVs plagued by a faulty capacitor."

Then there's the botched washer recall of over 3 million units:

http://www.today.com/money/samsung-isn-t-fixing-recalled-washers-some-consumers-claim-t106929

They did the same on 10 color Laser printers at work, we had problems with all of them. They fixed a few and the minute they went past the warranty they dropped service like a hot pocket gone bad........

That puts a different angle on things. I was specifically talking about the rating of the picture and other features, not so much the company itself.

Samsung TVs are able to spy on you. (Google it!) I'd scrap it for the wire and speakers.
