Is this SO box worth $250?

Yes. I'd value that about $350-400 easy. Those mid boxes are hard to find.

If you really don't need it, buy the boxes and you should be able to get most of your money back selling the mid box.

What's overall condition. From the posted pic, I see 7/10? Used boxes with 10/10 cost around $500. Make your decision.

the KR-557 is still a popular box because of it's 'can-do' status regardless of manufacture time/year. I have a KR-557B bottom with a KR-537A top, both manufactured in 1978 and it is a joy to own the pair.
the variant of the KR-557 bottom box that you've pictured looks to be the KR-557D. my guess is primarily based upon the location of the holes for the missing Snap-on badge. an earlier variant would have the badge holes on the opposite side of the box than the one shown.
it is very difficult to find correct middle box with same depth as the KR-557 bottom. the one pictured appears to be the KR-547B that is shown mated with the KR-557D in the Snap-on 1983 catalog. I believe that regardless of location/region, the middle box at $250+ would have a line of prospective buyers eager to part with their money.

For me? No, it’s not worth $250. The friction slides would kill the deal. I can go pick up a brand new box with ball bearing slides that would suit my needs for the same price.

Snap-on emblems can be had on eBay. lol

The Craftsman isn’t worth $70 either.

Friction slides aren't too bad once they're cleaned and lubed. If the slide rails on the box/drawers are torn, that can be a PITA fix. Soak the slides in rust rescue/evaporust then clear coating, brake-clean out the slide rails on the box so they're clean, then lube with candle wax. It sheds wax for a few days, but then is nice and easy.

Only real downside with friction slides are serious overloading/major weight, and irregular weight distribution side to side within the drawer. I use that bottom box with the flip-top top box at home. I like it a lot.


It's not a KRL, but it's sturdy and works well.
