I realize that growing out of one's tool bag and upgrading to a bigger bag/box is par for the course around here, but before I cut off the tags from the new bag and start loading it up with tools, only to potentially discover it's too small from the get-go, I figured I'd run it by the more experienced eyes at GJ.
Here are my current tools (a significant portion of which have been generously gifted to me by 930dreamer):
And here is the Husky 20" bag I plan to keep them in (the smaller 16" bag is for when I need to bring tools elsewhere - now that my family knows I'm doing my own auto wrenching, they want me to come work on their cars).
No power tools . . . yet. But I do have a somewhat immediate need for a drill, so I'll be adding that and drill bits at a minimum, and might potentially go for a drill+impact combo set if there's a big sale on one, but I figure that will come with it's own bag or case. And I have a dremel set in its own case. And bike tools in their own tool box.
One of the things that I like about that Husky bag is that with all the pockets, tools don't get buried and everything is easy to spot. The portability is nice, but realistically, once that thing is loaded, I'm probably not going to be carrying it anywhere, aside from taking it out of the closet to pull out the tools I need for a particular project. The smaller bag will handle the portability needs.
I'll probably keep a few of these tools in the car (a couple of screwdrivers, maybe a ratchet and some sockets, etc.). Assuming no major near-term additions to the tools, aside from aforementioned power tools, which will likely have their own bag, is the 20" bag with its many internal and external pockets large enough? I can always keep the torque wrenches (come with their own case) and socket rails on a nearby shelf and don't need to squeeze them into the bag.
