You can find a cheaper vise. But, It is a good vice that just needs a cleaning and nice coat of paint. In my mind, $100 isnt a ton of money for something that you will have and use for the rest of your life. Record is from England. Out of business in early 2000s and name bought by Irwin.

If it works well I wouldn't hestitate at that price. I bought a Record No. 8 in good working order for $80. It needs a good clean up, straightening of the handle and paint (Valspar has a good match). Mine needed new jaws and I picked them up at Acklands-Grainger for about $35.

I have 5 Record bench vices and a couple of wood vices. My No. 8 is the second one from the right. That's a No. 1 at the far left.

I bought a No. 6 and paid $80 for it too. It was in similar condition to my No. 8 and it cleaned up well.

Records are GREAT vices and you would be happy with that one for $100.

Agreed! $100 for a Record and an 8" no less! I'd offer $75 but definitely go up to $100. 707, you must be in NorCal. You don't see those pop up every day here.

I bought it. It's in awesome shape. I can't actually confirm in was ever bolted down. It works smooth as silk and just has a light misting of surface rust to clean up.

I did offer $80 and he just chuckled. I told him I at least had to try, to which he agreed. I'm in Humboldt and good used equipment is rare up here.

I see I am not the only one with a Record addiction. I have been hunting for a #8 for a while now, they do not come up very often.

BTW the swivel bases for the Gray vises fit perfect.

Keep - I've never looked closely but that makes sense. Record (now Irwin) has contracted out to several other brands and I always figured that Gray was one of them. BTW - thanks again for the lead you gave me re a source for new jaws. BTW again - coincidentally I'm heading off to Oshawa in an hour for a day of lacrosse.

Crusty Nut - Congrats - you're going to love that vice. No. 8's are monsters. Good luck lugging it home.
