ISO Rolling Tool Chest

I am looking for a rolling tool chest that is no more that 27 1/2" tall with 3 to 4 drawers. I'd like to stay $150 or less. Please let me know if anyone has suggestions.

At a $150 price point, a tool chest and rolling is a bad mix. $350 plus maybe. At $150 you might get a tool cart.

the 27.5 height is a deal breaker and your $150 price limit knocks out most of the industrial type suppliers like Durham and strong built. Good luck in your quest

Well, I decided instead of lowering the water, I will raise the bridge by four inches. I will make my work bench a bit higher and that will give me room under it for the rolling cabinet. With the Harbor Freight coupons, I can get the above cabinet for $149 or step up to its brother with more drawers for $199.

The ideal formula for bench height is "distance from elbow to floor, minus height of vise"

At around 34" tall, the 5 drawer craftsman roll cab is about the shortest I think of.

My Harbor Frieght cart is almost 38" at the closed lid

Several of the cheap Craftsman and Husky lowers offered online in the price range mentioned are only like 30" to the top

My most recent 5 drawer Craftsman roller is 34" but is over $200

Yup just pick up the HF ones and modify to fit. Not hard to cut and redrill holes for bottom shelf/casters. Just time and effort.

I don't even think he would have to even drill holes on the bulk storage cart, after looking at mine and taking a few quick tape measurements thinking could just attach the lower shelf with the wheels to middle shelf mounting point and then shorten the four uprights and be good

There are 3 holes using the upper and middle would result in what looks like 26.5" Using the middle and lower holes is 2" different or 28.5

I think that going to be my plan. I am still going to raise the table some...it is too low but I think I will also shorten the legs on the mechanics cart. Looking at them, the nicer 5 drawer is now $199...I think I am going to step up to that one.

If someone has one of these...would it be possible to put the casters right on the Bottom of the tool chest and not use the bottom tray?

well, I solved my problem. I got the above chest with the coupon for $199 then I didn't use the legs and lower shelf. This put me right at my goal 27".

The only downside I found with the cabinet is that the top has to be open so the drawers open. Is there a hack or do I just not shut the drawers completely.

Wow that is a different looking chest indeed

IIRC I think if you remove the rods the drawers wont lock

Not 100% sure on the "hack" but from the picture it looks like the top pushes down two black bars when closed to lock the drawers.

Can those bars be removed and or cut off so the lid does not push them into the lock position?
