I recently purchased a U.S.
General 3848. Everything works great but I noticed that the tank drain has broke off flush at the bottom. I have the replacement part but I need help for you guys. What is the best way to remove the part of the tank drain? Im thinking I can remove it or somehow block the opening with something so the tank can fill up with air. Any thoughts or suggestions?

If the part snaped off because something bumped it then an internal pipe wrench maybe able to remove the broken off part.

If it was twisted off in an attempt to remove it the internal pipe wrench is unlikely to get the job done.

Getting it red hot and letting it cool several times could not hurt.

I needed to remove a 2 inch plug in my tank I drilled a ring of 16 holes near the threads and enlarged each hole a few thousands at a time until I could see the top of the threads in the hole then hit it with the impact wrench back and for the for what seemed like hours before I detected any movement. Once it started moving it was not long before it was out.

With yours if I owned the next size larger pipe tap I would drill it out and retap.

While you are changing the tank drain make it easy to blow the condensate out of the tank; I have changed the PITA drain **** under my tank to a Ball Valve that can be operated by the toe of my shoe.

Assuming that the old valve/fitting was most likely brass, it'll be softer than the cast iron plug, so it should be easy to drill
out, chase the threads and install a new fitting. Looks to be 1/8"NPT I'd guess.

My tank was threaded for quarter inch pipe, I replaced the drain with a street ell and nippled over to a quarter turn ball valve. I can now drain the tank with the toe of my shoe. No more getting down on my hands and knees to drain the condensate from the tank.
