Issues with a diesel "torpedo" heater

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
I'm stumped.
I have an older "multifuel" heater that started running cold a while back. Pulled the lid off, and found the hoses had cracked, one almost in half.
Figured Simple, replace the hoses (used decent wuality fuel line instead of the cheapy chinese tubing that blew out), and now the thing won't run right when it has less than 1/2 a tank. In face, below that it smokes itself out...

Anyone have any clue how to remediate this? I've been into it 3 times, and still, nada. Don't need it *quite* yet, being late spring, but want to get it sorted before winter blasts us...

Could it be that the fuel tank is half filled with sludge? Fuel oil can be fouled by bacteria and "gell" up. They make additive to prevent that. Might be able to see it run for a longer time if you put the fuel suction line into a clean tank of fuel?

I had the same problem with a few older Mr heater torpedos, I think they were the 50000 btu ones; all of the fuel lines were split. I replaced the fuel lines and then had problems with keeping the thing running right. I ended up having to play with the fuel adjustment screw on the back.
I'd also back the screw all the way out and make sure the little ball and spring aren't gooed up and stuck. Also make sure the little foam filter isn't plugged up.
